I currently have a 6 Mbps cable Internet connection. This is relatively fast, and lets me download what I need to, when I need to but cable companies know they are going to see increasing competition from various providers, and have recently demonstrated a 150 Mbps cable modem, using what they call DOCSIS 3.0.

The technology, called DOCSIS 3.0, was developed by the cable industry’s research arm, Cable Television Laboratories. It bonds together four cable lines but is capable of allowing much more capacity. The laboratory said last month it expected manufacturers to begin submitting modems for certification under the standard by the end of the year.

With this technology, you could download around twenty-five times faster than current connections. I foresee some strongly enforced download caps coming out when this faster connection gets into the market.
