DC’s second issue of it’s newest year long weekly series is a much better entry point for new readers into the modern DC Universe. In this issue we see some familiar faces like Jimmy Olsen, Superman, Batman, and The Joker. We also see some more obscure characters like Karate Kid…plus the Flash villain “Rogue’s” gang make an appearance as well.
While I’ve still seen no reference to the 52 Earths I’m guessing that’s because it isn’t important to the story just yet (and yes, I know I run all over the Internet looking for information about DC history and the events of “52″ and other books…but I shouldn’t have to, and I’m not going to.). This issue felt a bit “thicker” than last week…not in page count, just in the amount of story that we received in the pages allotted.
The cliffhanger this week was also gave me a much more “What’s going to happen next?” feeling than last week. The story this issue again includes some face time for Jason Todd as the Red Hood (which I’m always happy about…I wish they’d just go ahead and give him his own book), and begins to show us Jimmy Olsen attempting to unravel the mystery of the death of The Joker’s “daughter”.
I’m still not sure how something like this reads to a new reader, but I do love that you get a taste of the entire DC Universe in one title…and I really enjoy knowing that there is going to be a new issue on the stands next week to continue the story. While Marvel is taking years to get 13 issues of books like “The Ultimates” out, DC has already proven that they can hit a weekly schedule without missing a beat.

1A?! Come on. It was terrible. “You slay me…let me slay you in return!” Great line, Joker.

2@Seth –
I would agree that’s not the best line of dialogue I’ve ever read, but I enjoyed the book, and I’m looking forward to the next issue…so yeah…I stand by the A.
There are a lot worse things on the shelves.
