The inquirer has released an interesting article about a “lone hobbyist” by the name of Michel, has made drivers for 235 webcams that use a particular chipset. It all started when he purchased the cheapest “Made in China” webcam he could find, but then switched to Linux since the drivers for Windows 2000 had a memory leak.

This lead him to develop drivers for his webcam himself, with the help of a couple of people he mentioned, and then to the development of many more drivers that used the same chipset. I really don’t know why Linux distro companies aren’t sponsoring this man. If a Messaging Client like Pidgin suddenly gained video-streaming support this man would be considered a Linux hero, although, in my opinion, he already is.
