After numerous rumors, even an April fools Starcraft MMO announcement which revived hope in the hearts of the millions of fans who bought copies of the original title. It’s official, Starcraft 2 is coming out, and it is now ,undoubtedly, the most eagerly awaited RTS game sequel ever announced.

Back in 98, Blizzard released the original strategy game which took the genre by storm, and even now is played by thousands of players. Unlike Warcraft, which is set on a medieval era, Starcraft is a sci-fi strategy game with a complex, and at the time ground-breaking, story campaign in which you took part in battles and missions that revolve around a long story-line. And what was really interesting about that, is that you basically followed the “same” story, through 3 completely different perspectives, through the 3 races you play with.

From what I’ve seen so far, from Starcraft 2, most of the original buildings are back, but there are also new ones, and of course, new units. And although the game now runs in a 3D engine, I have to admit that Blizzard managed to capture the original look very well without making the game feel dated.

There is no announcement regarding a speculated 4th race, which comes as a relief. Even if Blizzard only made the original title 3D, and introduced some new features in terms of online gameplay, the game would still sell very well. With new units, new perks in the current ones and a new storyline, which, hopefully, will be as engaging as the first, I think that it’s safe to say that this will instantly become a modern classic.

No release date has been announced. As always, Blizzards sticks to it’s “we are comited to quality (…) it will be released when we feel it’s ready” statement.

I, for one, welcome the Zerg as our new overlords ;)
