Sony’s stand alone BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player is now priced at $499 making it a full $100 cheaper than a PS3 – and since there are no real games of note for the PS3, Sony may have officially shot itself in the foot on the much suffering console.
As the Blu-ray/HD-DVD war continues, one can’t help but be saddened that it’s even happening. I want to move to hi-def disks. I want them on my HDtv, but as of yet, I haven’t been willing to pick a side. I’m torn – Blu-Ray has content like Casino Royale that I really want in HD – but HD-DVD has not only been chosen by the porn industry as the content distributor of choice, but also Wal-mart.
If two of the most disgusting, but extremely popular and dominating, industries/companies in the world have chosen HD-DVD – who am I to argue?
Especially when you add the fact that the cheapest HD-DVD player is already $100 cheaper than Sony’s reduced BDP-S300 (actually until Father’s Day it’s $200 dollars cheaper after an in-store instant rebate) – and the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox360 is 1/2 the price of the Sony player – it just makes me think HD-DVD is going to end up on top on this one.
Also…it’s Sony…I mean…look at their history with formats…they ALWAYS lose.
But if you want to buy it…you can check it out here.

1Although I’m not a fan of Sony’s formats either, I think that eventually Blu-Ray will win.
As soon as someone finds a way to play backed-up copies of Blu-Ray disks on the console, or as soon as some of Sony’s “real” titles come out, like Gran Turismo, or Final Fantasy 13, the numbers will start shifting, and Blu-Ray will become the preferred format.
In fact, I think that the numbers are already favoring the Blu-Ray format. Last time I saw a format-wars article, it was supposedly selling a little better than HD-DVD. And don’t forget that in Europe, and Japan, the console is selling well; not as well as Nintendo is, but good enough to make the format stand out compared to HD-DVD.
