If you’re a fan of Sci-Fi AT ALL, then you’ve at least heard the name, Doctor Who. In the US The Doctor (as he is called…Doctor Who is not his actual name) spent most of his previous lives exiled to late night PBS airings, but the show is the longest running sci-fi series in television history, and has a remarkable legacy.
The original series ran from 1963 to 1989. At that point there was no new Doctor Who, except for a failed pilot that was co-produced by the BBC and FOX that was set to be a new series that would air on FOX in the US and the BBC in the UK. The two hour pilot, which was aired as a Doctor Who movie, was not very well received, and the series was never picked up.
So, the Doctor was gone…
That is, until Russel T. Davies and company brought him back in a BBC series that started in 2005.
The new series has already gone through one actor playing the role of The Doctor. Chrisopher Eccleston played the character in the first season, but left the show after the initial episodes. His replacement, David Tennant, is (arguably…and I do mean arguably among Doctor Who fans) the most popular Doctor ever. Tennant plays the enigmatic hero with an unbelievable passion that truly bursts off the screen.
IGN has posted a comprehensive (but only 2 page long) Primer for getting to know The Doctor. If you’re new to the series, this will get you started and ready to go for the official start of the 3rd season on Sci-Fi.
New Doctor Who episodes air on Fridays at 9/8 Central.
I love this show. I have to get the episodes via torrent as I CAN NOT wait for them to finally air in the US. Thankfully some helpful Brits are out there uploading them to the Interweb for us all to enjoy!
