A website called Notebook Review, recently had the opportunity to give the Asus Eee a test-drive, and from the look of things, they are impressed with the device, despite having it’s obvious short-comings.

This laptop comes with a custom version of Linux. It has a very simple interface, which consists on a few Tabs, with different applications called “Web”, “Work”, “Learn”, “Play”, “Settings” and “Favorites”. Some of the icons in the tabs open up web pages, like one of the icons on the “Learn” tab, which opens up Wikipedia in Firefox.

You can turn on the device in 10 seconds, and according to the writer, it only takes 10 seconds when it decides to be “slow”. And it takes about 5 seconds to shut down. I don’t know any laptop that can do that. My cellphone sometimes takes more than 10 seconds to boot up, and it’s not a cheap one.

The touchpad, and it’s mouse button, is one click only (oh, the shock!). But if you intend on using the default Operative System, the writer says that having only one button for the mouse is sufficient.

The build quality is a bit questionable. It’s not falling apart or anything, but the one who was testing said that the laptop feels very fragile, and if you intend on purchasing one and carry it around on your backpack with some books, you should get something to protect it first.

Initially, Asus intended on selling this laptop for $199, but now they are considering selling it for $250 for the model with the 8GB disk (NAND flash), or a bit more for the 16GB model (also NAND flash). It will ship during August, and Asus expects to sell it in most countries.
