It’s amazing to me that the mobile phone industry is celebrating the 15th year of the Short Message Service Center (SMSC). The SMSC was the “principal application behind text messaging” and was first brought to the market by Acision in 1992. Over the years it has evolved into an IP-based SMS architecture that is capable of sending an almost unlimited number of messages simultaneously (versus the 10 messages a second it could send in its debut).
I’ve only recently started using SMS services, but I’m sure they’ll continue to be an essential communication tool for everyone for years to come. Now, if they could just stop over charging for the darn things….
