As the world’s most desirable gadget, which gave Apple $200 million of profit on it’s first weekend alone, it’s no wonder that all kinds of people have been trying to unlock it’s potential. The first of these hacks, at least as I’m aware of, allows you to activate your iPhone without needing to sign up for an At&t account.
You can use the iPod functionality, and Wifi still works, but obviously you can’t use Edge or any other things that require the cellphone network. But still, at least it allows you to get some functionality out of your expensive iPod if you don’t want to pay for the plan right now, or even if you’ve bought the iPhone or are still waiting for the contract to end.
The instructions on how to do it aren’t very clear, but surely there’s some FAQ somewhere deep withing some hacking forum, so just Google for it.
He sniffed the real activation process and built small script that acts as a fake webserver and responds to itunes and the iphone as if it were the real one, unlocking it. Nothing terribly complicated.. you mod your hosts file so it thinks apple’s activation site is your local computer and then run his little server for itunes to talk to.
