Sounds like it uses infrared which silicon is sensitive to, although not sure how it gets around the fact that there are usually IR filters in camera lenses.

My guess is that the clothing must be using a fluorescing infrared dye. This would work best if you can wash it off and change the message as often as you like. Cool.
