It looks like we’re finally going to get some of the cellphone functions that the Japanese have had for years now. Nokia has announced a new service called Assisted GPS which will allow users to find their location and guide them better using the data network.

If you have a Nokia N95 handset, you can already take advantage of this free* server (you’ll have to pay for the data transfer rates) by using Nokia’s software update.

The service operates in tandem with a technical framework that allows third parties, such as service providers, to provide their own regional A-GPS services, making fix times even faster in certain areas- to the benefit of their subscribers.

Looks like another good excuse to get a hold of an N95, if you can bear paying the full price for it.
