Well, likeness variations between animation models and toy models has been a staple of Transformers since their genesis. I think the toys actually do a better job of capturing the animation model asthetic than Beast Wars did (which very often had animation models that looked *nothing* like the toys).
As far as Prime goes, I’ve heard nothing but good things about him, particularly the Automorph gimmick which transforms portions of the toy automatically while you transform portions manually, creating a really sweet effect as various plates and gears peal away on their own. And unlike the built-in gimmicks of the previous three lines, the Automorph function doesn’t encrouch upon the toy’s appearance or mobility. I only wish I had the room and the cash to buy more than just the Real Gear guys (which, BTW, are fantastic).
But you’re right, not *all* the toys look so hawt. I still can’t bring myself to like Ratchet or Starscream. Barricade is the shit, though (Frenzy, not so much).

See, I really hate the movie toys. I think they look horrible. The vehicle modes look good, but the robot modes don’t look anything like the movie bots to me.

In fact, the movie Optimus may be the first Optimus released that I don’t buy…but I haven’t totally ruled that out yet…

Several were actually shown by Hasbro at Botcon via the toyline promotion, but photographs were banned so there’s no images on the internet to show for it (at least none that I’ve been able to find). Supposedly the toys look good, though, and make the stylized character models work with the vehicle modes and the transformations nicely. I know a lot of people didn’t think the 2007 movie designs could be worked into toys, and so far this line has given us some fantastic actions figures.

Ok, I have to admit, a lot of this sounds encouraging, although I still think the designs are terrible, and I can’t figure out why they don’t just hire Peter Cullen to do Optimus.

I’m glad to hear the Decepticons are going to be involved with the human supervillains. In a lot of ways, that’s no different from the mad scientists that sided with the Decepticons in the original show.

What you’re describing here sounds a lot more like the original series than what was described by the producers.

Got any Decepticon designs for us yet?
