With all of the crazy warfare going on between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, you’d think that those two would be the only formats fighting for Digital Disk supremacy. Well, it appears not, since Buffalo has just announced the release of a new type of disks called Magnetic Optical Disks which basically have the capacity of CD, but are enclosed in a protective case.

Back when Iomega’s Zip Drives were popular, and CDs came out, people started adopting the new disks almost immediately, not only because of the capacity but also because of their portability. Unless this solution is extremely accessible, I don’t really see why people would choose to use MO disks over conventional DVDs or Tapes to backup their files.

2I believe it was SyQuest that came up with this sort of case originally with an 80MB magetic disk in a cartridge. They sold well, but not wildly so.

4MO disks were popular in Japan when I lived there over 10 years ago. I still have lots of 640MB disks laying around, as well as an Olympus SCSI MO drive.

5I could see a use for this 6 years ago, when we had an MO jukebox running as a server. Of course, having left 6 years ago, they may STILL be using the jukebox.
