Kevin Smith has a busy road ahead of him. Not only is he working on a new pilot for the CW, Reaper, but he’s also got two pretty geektastic shows in his future.
It’s been pretty common knowledge for a while now that he would be taking on an episode of Heroes: Origins, a set of six or so one-shot episodes to take place over the show’s hiatus in December. But over the weekend, ViewAskew announced that he would also be sitting in the directors chair for an episode of SCI FI’s Battlestar Galactica.
It’s cool, but it is scary because it is like, “What the f—? I can’t bring anything to that show.” That show is genius and they have a very distinctive visual style. But you are safe as a kitten. If you go in there and say, “I’m going to shoot everything in one big master shot,” they’ll go, “No you’re not, because that is not what we do on ‘Battlestar Galactica.’” I guess it is more about performance-oriented stuff, but at the same time that cast is top notch. How do you f—– direct Mary McDonnell?
I can see how it could work with Heroes, as the one-shot nature of his episode will allow him to inject his own style, but he doesn’t have that luxury with Battlestar Galactica. Should be interesting to see how that turns out.

1I think he’s taking on these jobs to expand as a filmmaker. Hopefully he’ll do that. He had Green Hornet locked up a few years ago, and chickened out because he was afraid he couldn’t make it visually interesting enough.
If he can make these two shows as visually interesting as they should be, then maybe he’ll be ready to flex his muscles (both of them) on a project that is a little more action oriented.

2Hopefully if he does a lot of TV he’ll learn some of the visual stuff he may have missed out on learning with his first film doing so well.
Most directors do a bunch of crap before they get a hit but learn while doing those duds. TV can teach pretty well just look at how good Josh Whedon is.
