Most directors do a bunch of crap before they get a hit but learn while doing those duds. TV can teach pretty well just look at how good Josh Whedon is. Hopefully he'll do that. He had Green Hornet locked up a few years ago, and chickened out because he was afraid he couldn't make it visually interesting enough. If he can make these two shows as visually interesting as they should be, then maybe he'll be ready to flex his muscles (both of them) on a project that is a little more action oriented.
