Trekweb found some info on IGN about a casting rumor for Star Trek XI that makes my stomach turn.
According to reports, JJ Abrams is talking to Tom Cruise about a cameo appearance as Captain Pike. For those of you that don’t know your Trek history (and shame on you), Captain Christopher Pike was the Captain of the Enterprise before James T. Kirk took command.
While I’m all for an “A” list celebrity taking over the role, Tom Cruise just flat out makes me sick. As much bad press as he’s gotten in the media lately, and the lackluster performance of Mission: Impossible 3, I’m just not sure what value he would be bringing to the film. Plus, it just seems like a goofball like him playing the role would stick out so bad in the movie that you’d be taken completely out of the film when he briefly popped up.
ugh. I hope this rumor isn’t true.

1I don’t think he’s such a terrible actor. I blame the scriptwriters more than I do him. He’s been in some of my favorite movies ever, Interview with the Vampire, The Last Samurai…
But I agree with you, the Mission Impossible sequels were terrible. The first one was alright, sort of…

I actually don’t think he’s a terrible actor either. I have enjoyed several of his movies, but recently he’s made an ass out of himself publically on several occasions, and there is a growing negative connotation with him.
I think Star Trek has enough of an uphill battle reconnecting with people as it is, and I’d rather this kind of stunt casting just not be associated with it.

3All I can say is that I’ve never liked the man’s acting. (And with the recent “weirdness” in his life – I don’t see myself gaining any respect for the guy in any other form either.)
I was enough of a “fan” of the old “Mission: Impossible” series that I actually spent money to see Mr. Cruise’s attempt in the movie theatre. (Just the first one though, I have yet to see the sequels.)
I can pretty much guarantee that if Mr. Cruise IS in the next Star Trek movie – I’ll likely skip it entirely. (Or at the very least buy my ticket for a different show and sneak in. – I’m not contributing to man’s “success” anymore.)

4They’re not smart pissing off the Star Trek fans. Have you noticed how many there are and the extremes they’ll go to in order to show just how much they love Star Trek. I see someone getting on the wrong end of a homemade disruptor if this one goes through.

5Wait a second people, are we judging him as a person or as a professional? If we’re judging his participation on Star Trek as an actor entirely for personal reasons than that doesn’t make much sense.
I enjoy Michael Jackson’s music, some of it, but I hate him as a person. Still, I own a few albums of his because I appreciate his work. Let’s not get the two things mixed together.

I don’t think you can always keep the two things separate. I don’t watch Victor Salva movies because he’s a child molester. I’m not going to support him no matter what. I don’t like him as a person.
More on that here:

I don’t like Tom Cruise as a person. As a result, I don’t enjoy watching his work. I don’t want to support his success, so I don’t want him in this movie.
My opinion on Michael Jackson is a whole different subject. I think it’s much more likely that Jackson is crazy than it is that he’s a child molester. They can’t convict him because the people that keep claiming her did terrible thing to their children all have a history of trying to scam people out of money.
but, like I said…that’s a whole different debate…

7I have to say that I think ol’ Tom is a really poor actor and a bad choice for Star Trek – any big name isn’t a good choice – but is any actor that has been in Startrek a very good actor anyway? Mr Kirk :) , gee he’s good isn’t he?

9Please, God, no.
I despise him. I tried giving War of the Worlds a shot, after seeing him flip out. But I can’t separate his personal life from his acting now. He is ruined in my eyes.

10As a lifelong Trekkie I can say that if he IS cast in the new movie, his wretched acting will taint the universe I love forever. Please Dear God no!
