Some of you are going to be cynicle about this, and that’s fine – but I’m excited about this idea. The One Laptop Per Child program is a great way, I think, to spread technology to developing countries. I hope, sincerely, that these people already have other necessities before they get computers, but I think spreading computer knowledge across the world is a great idea.
The OLPC program will cost you $399 for your laptop. You’ll get one, and a child in another country will get one as well. It’s a great way to not only get a cool, cheap, laptop, but also help a child who would never have the opportunity to get a computer at all, get a nice, inexpensive machine, to learn about the world that computing can open up.
but, yeah – they’ll probably play video games and watch porn with it. Ah well…

1This is awesome!
These are not just a normal laptop, they have some really amazing features in relation to power saving (the screen can stay on with the GPU off, the CPU sleeps during keypresses, etc).
I think the more UMPCs on the market, the better. People do want small, light laptops for casual email/surfing/IM purposes. This one also has the “human factor” of helping a person less advantaged than yourself. I think they look really trendy, too!
(ps: it’s spelt “cynical”)
