There’s only so much you can do with a USB cable, but Samsung seems to be pushing it’s limits quite well, with their latest unveiling, a USB monitor. Even if your computer doesn’t support multiple monitors, Samsung’s monitor will do the work that the graphics card normally would.
As if that wasn’t enough, you can plug up to 6 of these to your computer, even if it’s a small laptop like the one pictured below.

If Samsung can get a monitor working via USB, I wonder when they’ll start giving some of their other products the same functionality, you know, like a Washing Machine or a Refrigerator… I’d buy one of those.

1when you say that the monitor can do the work that the graphics card usually would, does that mean that you can hook up a monitor to a laptop and play games that you can’t on your laptop b/c the graphics card sucks?

2whats really going on is that the “driver” sets up a virtual screen, and then compress the data on the fly, spitting it to the display that then decompress it in hardware at its end.

3USB video cards have been out for a while, we have them on some of the smaller (non-upgradeable) SFF PCs around work.
This just integrates the USB video card into a monitor. Very convenient for the consumer.
And no, you wouldn’t play games on them, not the ones we have anyway. The performance is good enough to draw 2D windows (with lag if you drag stuff around fast) but I don’t think USB 2.0 could provide enough bandwidth and speed for a 3D video card to function.
