The concept of Gravatar is simple. By using a “universal” e-mail on a blog with Gravatars enabled, you are able to see the Avatar you chose on the said blog.

Unfortunately, the road has been all but clear for the folks behind Gravatar, because as the service grew at a pace that is faster than they anticipated, they were forced to restructure the whole service behind it. That restructuring lead to a downtime which at the time seemed never ending, because the folks at Gravatar spoke almost nothing about the situation.

Thankfully it seems that the future is now brighter, because Automattic, the company that made Wordpress (which powers ForeverGeek) has acquired Gravatar and will perhaps help to turn it into a more reliable service.

Right now Gravatar is a bit “stained” because of the hiccups they had in the past and a lot of bloggers refrain from using them due to the slowdowns they might cause, but hopefully with Automattic behind the wheel, they will have the necessary resources to keep the service running properly and win back the hearts of the bloggers who left them.
