If you’re a Powerbook owner but feel enticed by the latest Mac OS X’s features, then you’re probably wandering how well it would run. Thankfully, one of the Gizmodo editors installed it on his 1Ghz Powerbook with 768MB of RAM. Here’s what he had to say:

Basic use: Using Coverflow with Safari, iChat, and iTunes open and it’s choppy. (Quick Look works well, though.)

That’s not bad at all, but of course we have to wait for more exhaustive testing to draw any real conclusions. I’d say you’re safe if you’ve got an older mac. RAM will help, but if you’re counting the iLife and Leopard costs, you might just want to put that ~$200 towards a new mac. Just saying.

So there you have it Powerbook owners, the conclusion is grab more RAM, or grab yourself a new shinny Mac, or wait for the upcoming “metal” Macbooks that everyone’s been rumoring about.
