So I am slowly shopping around for a second LCD for my computer. Originally, when I got my 19″ LCD a while back, I used my 17″ CRT monitor as my second monitor, but that thing just gave me horrible head aches, so eventually, I ditched it, but since then, I have been feeling very limited with just one monitor. I watch as the prices on 24″ widescreen LCD’s come down to what could be considered a more reasonable price, and 22″ LCD’s price themselves around what my 19″ one was selling half a year ago, and you realize that huge screen real estate is not as expensive as it Read more »

Personal Disaster Recovery: Backup, Don’t Archive!
One thing that I know many people forget is to backup their work, and it really makes me frustrated. Even us geeks sometimes forget, and that is just unthinkable. Geeks are Sexy has a great post up about backing up your computer. Aside from malware/spyware and viruses, the biggest trouble with most home computers can probably be attributed to the build-up of user data over time. You’ve seen it happen over and over again: digital pictures, videos, documents, spreadsheets, and more fill up the drive and eventually adversely affect the performance of the computer. The problem is that many do not backup their data correctly… When I worked at a Read more »
OpenOffice Online
So it looks like OpenOffice, the popular Microsoft Office replacement is working on a web version, much like Google Documents. Ars Technica had a chance to give it a run through and found it to be decent, but not perfect. Here is a snippet from their article: With this beta offering of a desktop suite, however, it’s clear that Ulteo’s initial public milestone was simply to get OpenOffice.org working in a web browser. Users seeking the collaborative or document-sharing features of competitors like Google Docs or even Microsoft’s Office Live Workspace should keep on walking. While Online OpenOffice.org offers 1GB of online storage space for all your documents, nary a Read more »

Xbox 360 DivX/XviD: Nearly Perfect
So Gizmodo has taken an in depth look at the way the Xbox 360 handles DivX and XviD files since the fall update adding the ability to the console. I am very happy to see Microsoft continuing to expand the usefulness of the Xbox 360, and continue to find myself with more and more temptation to pick up the 120GB hard drive, since my measly 20GB one is always full. According to Gizmodo, the way the Xbox 360 handles these new file types is pretty darn good, and after some helpful advice from people commenting, the reviewer realized it was better than he thought. There were still some issues though, Read more »
Scoble to Leave PodTech
Once attached at the hip to Microsoft, Robert Scoble is now leaving the video production start up, PodTech, that he really helped bring into the light. Currently, he is considering either going to Fast Company to run Fast Company TV, or to some other undisclosed offer. It is sad to see such an enterprising company lose such a big brand, but Scoble must do what is best for him. Here is a bit from his blog post on the matter: I told everyone that it was true that I had decided to leave PodTech, but that Fast Company hasn’t been signed yet and that I’m still considering two options, one Read more »
Command and Conquer: First Person Shooter
I am a huge fan of the Command and Conquer franchise, and despite a few missteps, I am always excited to hear a new game is coming out, so today, when I saw a post saying Tiberium Revealed, my excitement was peaked. Tiberium is the main resource in the Command and Conquer series, and so I had to check it out. Much to my surprise, it seems like EA Games is going to try to make a Command and Conquer game outside the real time strategy genre. The new game, currently entitled Tiberium first person shooter game is said to be like Ghost Recon, and will allow you to control Read more »
w00t Word Fans Rejoice: Added to the Dictionary
If you are a fan of rejoicing with the word w00t, with zero’s instead of the normal “o” for vowels, then you will be happy to know that Merriam-Webster, in their 2007 Word of the Year contest, has added the interjection used to express joy to their dictionary. In 2004 it was blog. In 2005 it was integrity. Last year it was truthiness. This year, among the twenty words competing for Merriam-Webster’s 2007 Word of the Year contest, are seven words that aren’t quite dictionary material just yet. Check out all the details at Read/Write Web All I can say is w00t, though some people think that this is nothing Read more »
New Iron Man toys coming next year
One of the most hotly anticipated movies next year is the new Iron Man movie. The cleverly cast film (Robert Downey, Jr. is a spot on choice for Tony Stark) is scheduled to be shown on May 2, 2008, which marks beginning of the summer film season. Of course, a superhero film will never be complete with the merchandising. At action-figure.com, someone already posted previews of the upcoming toy line from Hasbro. This is a potentially impressive line. I especially love the prototype armor that is reminiscent of the first Iron Man armor in the comicbooks. I’m definitely adding these toys to my collection. Cool Christmas gift: Cubeworld Cubes
It’s really hard to choose gifts for your techie friends. Most likely they already have what you have and what they don’t have, they don’t for a reason (it’s too expensive, phasers haven’t been invented yet). It’s a real dilemma. For problems like this, there is only one solution, amusing gifts with a tech bent to it. Take for example the Cube World cubes from Radicagames. It’s a nifty desk decor consisting of a colorful cube with an LCD. The LCD depics a virtual character. that moves around the cube. The real cool thing happens when you buy a bunch of Cube World cubes and then connect them via the Read more »
