Star Trek reboot to blast off this year

Star Trek reboot to blast off this year

If there’s one movie that has the geeks all excited, it’s the Star Trek re-boot being helmed by JJ Abrams. Not a lot of info is being given to the media in terms of the story but, thankfully, the cast has been announced. Chris Pine will play Kirk, with Heroes’ Zachary Quinto getting the role of Spock. The coolness factor of the casting has been ramped up especially with Karl Urban and Simon Pegg also signing on to the movie. Eric Bana is also in the cast as a new Romulan villain. For those who need to sate their Trek addiction, the teaser trailer for the movie has already been Read more »

The Rock is Black Adam

The Rock is Black Adam

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is currently developing the big screen “Shazam” adaptation along with director Pete Segal, and of course, comicbook fanboys are quite thrilled about this. The great thing about the casting though is The Rock’s decision to let fans dictate which character they wanted him to play. As a big star, it would have been a given for him to play Captain Marvel. But the fans are clamoring for him to play another character — none other than Black Adam himself, and he has announced that he will, indeed go for that role. I really think The Rock is better suited to play Black Adam. Here’s one reason Read more »

TechCanuck Podcast

If you are interested in technology, the web, and the businesses associated with each, you’ll most likely enjoy the TechCanuck podcast, of which I am a co-host. James Cogan of Dailypixel and I try to come together on Skype every two-ish weeks to record. The latest episode, episode 16, covers Automattic (the company that runs WordPress), the likely recession in North America and how it will effect online advertising rates, and our thoughts on the Apple MacBook Air. Check it out on Dailypixel.ca. Read more »

Finally saw Cloverfield!

Finally saw Cloverfield!

I finally found the time to watch Cloverfield yesterday. And you know what? I actually liked it! Just to get this one minor detail out of the way, I didn’t get dizzy at any time during the movie. I never got bored, too. The whole “shaky cam” theme was actually quite effective. It made the movie more visceral, more in your face. You are forced to really get into the fear that the protagonists are going through. Even though the characters are not well fleshed out, character development is not really front and center in this movie but what they face and go through. It’s a character piece in monster Read more »

Review: Western Digital My Passport

Review: Western Digital My Passport

Western Digital‘s My Book range is excellent – and in fact is eponymous, as if you put it on a bookshelf you’ll find that it blends right in.  Well, Western Digital has gone one further.  The new release in their external hard drive family is the My Passport Essential. This incredibly small, sexy drive is less than five ounces in weight and has tiny dimensions to match.  You can purchase it in either 160, 250 or 320GB sizes, which is a lot of data storage whatever you do – not least due to the physical size of the drive. As usual with the Western Digital products, you don’t tend to Read more »

Cheaper iTunes for the UK

Well, there’s more Apple information about at the moment than you can shake a stick at, what with the new Macbook Air coming out and the iPhone still making headlines.  Finally, in what has been most welcome news, Apple has slashed the price paid for songs from 79p down to 64p. This is of course brilliant news for those of us who own an iPod.  Frankly I’ve always thought that the price tag has been a little high – given that I could get an album for not much more at a supermarket, which gave me a physical product I could then play in the car etc. Of course, mentioning Read more »

Asus E-Brand Expanding to Desktops and TV's

By now, I am sure everyone has heard of the Asus Eee, a brand that has been selling a fair number of small, portable laptops for the company. I have been eyeing a their Eee line in hopes of having a really great blogging machine on the go. Something light, and reasonable for typing up stories no matter where I am travelling. Next, it seems like they will be creating a desktop computer, all-in-one monitor and a large LCD TV. They will all follow under the simple, basic and really cheap strategy that has been working out really well for their sub-notebooks. The E-DT will include an Intel Celeron processor Read more »

Cloverfield rant

Cloverfield rant

I still haven’t seen Cloverfield but I’ve been anticipating the movie ever since I got wind of it. JJ Abrams take on the monster movie is just something this geek is not going to let pass. I’ve been reading comments about the movie from those who have seen the movie though and although I am not easily swayed by other people’s opinions, I do wonder why a)they complain that they don’t see the monster so much, and b)why is the camera too jerky. I think these are the people who really do not bother to read. First, Abrams never said that it is going to be an out and out Read more »

New Wii exploit without using a mod chip

New Wii exploit without using a mod chip

The Nintendo Wii is the first new console (I won’t say next gen) in this generation to be successfully modded. Modchips for the Nintendo smash hit was made available already a few months ago much to the chagrin of Nintendo and the delight of geeks who have no qualms about “piracy”. Nintendo has tried to address these exploits by making physical changes to the console but every single time it has been  thwarted with the arrival of new chips that break this new protection. Now, there is a new exploit that can be chalked up against the Wii, and this time it’s a doozy.  The new exploit allows for homebrews Read more »

Rumors of a new PS3 variant

Rumors of a new PS3 variant

There are growing rumors that the PlayStation 3 is about to make another shakeup in its lineup this year. The prevailing rumor is that the new 80GB version is going to be phased out in favor of a bigger capacity hard drive. The company is still going to maintain its two-variant approach by keeping the 40Gb version in the market. But the change would be in the high end as it removes the 80GB version with the bundled Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray for a possible 120 to 160GB drive and also bundling in the new Dual Shock 3 controller (the one with the rumble feature put back in). At this Read more »
