If you haven’t heard, Electronic Arts is releasing a new version of Battlefield.  Before you get all excited (like I did), this one isn’t exactly for the hardcore gamer.  Instead, this is a game that will apparently even run on your granny’s laptop.  So say EA.

Battlefield Heroes will not be available in shops and instead will be distributed online only.  Users will download the game, that has been developed to run on older technology as well as modern PC’s, and the core product will be free.  However, it will be reliant on ads and micro-payments in order to make money and be successful.

Similar to the Nintendo Wii, the focus will be more on fun and being able to ‘dip in and out’ rather than skill and strategy.  Luckily, the gaming experience won’t be marred in any way by ‘in game’ advertisements, instead they will be placed on the website and the menus etc.

As I’m an avid gamer, I’d be loath to put the boot in to a product that I know very little about at this stage.  What I will say however is that I’m hoping things don’t go too far toward the ‘fun and participation’ angle.  I know why publishers are seeking to do this, but I also feel that it could eventually take over the more ‘hardcore’ of games such as Crysis.

Maybe there’s a happy medium to reach or we’ll really see games for everyone in the future.  Whichever way things go, it’s ideas like this that are really pushing the envelope and could pay for your next Battlefield on your 32 core monster in 2016.
