I finally had my custom made entertainment cabinet finished a few days ago and I was pretty happy with the results. All of my DVDs are now in one drawer for easy access, my audio and A/V equipment are stacked up properly, and all of my consoles are now out of their boxes and proudly displayed.

I’ve tried to start a video game console collection a few years ago and I’d like to think that I’ve made a pretty decent list. I have a Nintendo Family Computer, a SuperNES, a thick PlayStation, the slimmed down PSOne, a thick PlayStation 2, a Sega Dreamcast and a Nintendo Wii. I also have a Nintendo DS.

Opening the boxes of all the old consoles was a nostalgia trip in itself. I remembered the sad circumstances that led me to buy the Dreamcast (which was bought just a couple of months before I decided to get a PS2), the amusing story my wife had about the Nintendo Family Computer and her older brother and sister (it’s hers), and how the PSOne kept my wife from going bonkers when she was put on bedrest for three months because of a delicate pregnancy.

Some people may think that video games are just for kids and a shallow form of entertainment. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Video gaming has managed to become an unexpected marker to important chapters in my life. And you know what? The geek in me is happy that it did.
