I never knew the porn industry would also have a serious stake on the current HD format wars. According to news articles I’ve read the adult film industry is still maintaining a wait and see attitude with regards to which format to support.
I know that adult films are a multi million dollar industry but I was quite surprised — pleasantly so, I might add — that they are keeping up with the times and are actually on the cusp of new technologies. It’s so easy to earn money without even adopting a new format because, if you think about it, I don’t see any benefits for adopting to the HD format for porn movies. Standard definition works perfectly well. I have to say though, I’d love to see what HD quality pictures will bring to the world of porn.

Executives in the adult-film industry spoke Wednesday during the opening day of the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2008, which briefly overlaps with the more mainstream Consumer Electronics Show ending Thursday.
“It could be a real sign that things will shift,” Jeff Thill, director of video operations for the Hustler Video Group, said about the Warner decision. Thill said he sees no advantage of one format over the other, but is “leaning Blu-Ray” after Warner’s announcement.
The Blu-ray camp, led by Sony, has been fighting Toshiba and its HD DVD format for years in a battle reminiscent of the VHS versus Betamax battle. In that fight, Betamax maker Sony’s refusal to work with the porn industry helped usher in a VHS victory when the adult industry capitalized on the burgeoning popularity of VCRs and video rentals.
Hustler had some success recently with the Blu-ray release of Jenna Haze Oil Orgy, said Thill, who was on hand to showcase Hustler’s latest releases at the annual AVN Adult Entertainment Expo.

1One clarification, Mel. I think the adult industry is actually not just keeping up-to-date with technology, but they are a driver of technology themselves. Check out this dated article on Macworld.

2Don’t get around much, do you? Porn has been the driving force between most technologies, including the VHS/Betamax decision.

3“I’d love to see what HD quality pictures will bring to the world of porn.”
The odd part of that statement being how much porn really relies on higher quality imagery to sell compared to what it can put out now. It’s a factor, but I would consider it a rather small one.
I also think the answer between the two formats is none of the above. Ultimately I think we are going to see people just download the content and then use things like disks, in whatever format that’s out, for pure archiving purposes. For everyday use a person needs not a whole lot of data storage, but yet terabyte hard drives are in stores now. Why? Because eventually people are simply doing to archive all of their media via the computer. mp3s are slowly replacing the CD. Any gaming system(PC, console) has ways to download games, demos, patches, etc. A number of movie places are letting people download movies. I think whoever wins this war won a war that they already lost.
