There are growing rumors that the PlayStation 3 is about to make another shakeup in its lineup this year. The prevailing rumor is that the new 80GB version is going to be phased out in favor of a bigger capacity hard drive.
The company is still going to maintain its two-variant approach by keeping the 40Gb version in the market. But the change would be in the high end as it removes the 80GB version with the bundled Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray for a possible 120 to 160GB drive and also bundling in the new Dual Shock 3 controller (the one with the rumble feature put back in). At this point, it really is just a rumor but there have been some recent stock movements in some of the bigger chain stores and this could mean that Sony really has something up its sleeve.
If this is just a mere hard drive upgrade though then I really don’t see any reason for old PS3 owners to dump their old units. The PS3 has made changing the hard drive quite easy and without resorting to any conflicts with the actual hardware. Try doing that with the Xbox 360 hard drive…
n, though in light of Best Buy’s recent stock changes, there certainly is an air of movement over at Sony.
