groundhog

I had a super geeky idea this morning.  It’s an idea that should have FTD, Proflowers and Hallmark eating out of the palm of my hand.

It’s the Groundhog Day bouquet.

Nothing to do with Punxsutawney Phil or whether or not he saw his shadow (he did), the Groundhog Day bouquet is the gift that keeps giving, and giving and giving.

It’s this humble author’s opinion that the Bill Murray classic sharing the holiday’s name, is enough of a mainstream holiday gem to spawn repetitive products, including flowers.

Here’s how it would work.

You would order up flowers for your significant other.  Instead of arriving in one large gaudy display, the shipment would be broken into three, and delivered individually.  Imagine the look on her face.

“Jessica, somebody sent you flowers.”

One hour later.

“Jessica, somebody sent you flowers.”

One hour later.

“Jessica, somebody sent you flowers.”

And so on.

There are hundreds of suits holed up somewhere trying to figure out how to make even more money off of the holidays.  Why not try the Groundhog approach. You get to beat everyone to the Valentine’s Day punch and say ‘I love you’ again and again.

It can span beyond flowers too. The entire gimmick is that the same delivery occurs multiple times, initially causing all kinds of confusion and chaos.

And while we’re on the subject of groundhogs, they sure have some nerdy names.  Aside from the aforementioned Punxsutawney Phil, here are some other weather prognosticators. Atlanta, Georgia has General Beauregard Lee, Tennessee has Wiarton Willie and Vancouver, BC has Furby The Wonder Chicken.  Yes, a chicken.

The only groundhog with a “cool” name is New York’s Staten Island Chuck. Mess with him? Fugghetaboutit!
