If You Like Old School…

Well no-one has commented on it yet, so I felt I had to. What I’m referring to in both the title and that somewhat esoteric comment is the new 3rd person action game to hit shelves – Devil May Cry 4.

Let me just come out and say it – this is one amazing, if tough game. Nero, the new lead, actually handles rather like Dante from previous games, and in fact this one. He has the firearm (but not the dual pistols), the big sword and to add variation a devil-arm. This allows, for the first time in the series, the use of a throw move.

As usual for the Devil May Cry games, there is a lot of emphasis on the whole ’style’ aspect of the game. There’s no denying that the main playable character is a rather typical looking hero and wouldn’t look out of place in films such as Hero and The Stormriders.

If you’ve played the previous games in the series, you’ll be rather familiar with the third person (sometimes from interesting camera angles) action – and I mean a lot of action. If you’ve played Ninja Gaiden but not the DMC series, the game still won’t be too inaccessible to you.

As with other games of this type, you’ve got access to a shop of sorts where you can upgrade weapons, along with new abilities being opened up by defeating bosses. Mentioning which, you’ll be amazed at the bosses themselves who are huge, intimidating and varied.

Overall, Devil May Cry 4 is an excellent game. However, what I will say is that you’re better off not bothering if you’re a gamer who is, well frankly, not very good. This is a game that might throw more than 10 enemies in a small corridor to you without even breaking a sweat. If you’re keen though, don’t look elsewhere.
