In case you haven’t heard, Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller from Remedy, the developer of successful titles including Max Payne and Max Payne 2. The game is due for the Xbox 360 and PC – and has been re-confirmed once again for September 2008.
The game puts the player in control of Alan Wake, a successful horror writer until he lost his muse and love (all very Silent Hill so far). He travels to Bright Falls in order to start afresh and come to terms with his loss. He writes a book about his nightmares (as you do as a successful author, as Stephen King will attest to) but unfortunately, these nightmare begin to come true.
The game gives you access to a cinematic world that enables you to roam freely in hyper-realistic, dynamic and interactive environments. Alan Wake is mission-based with a deeply engaging and suspenseful story line unveiling new twists and profound character revelations at every turn. Apparently this will give it a combined feel of Silent Hill or Resident Evil mixed with Grand Theft Auto (as you have freedom to move around the city).
Apparently, the game has excellent graphics and you can certainly see that from the video. More to the point, the game will use an exceptionally detailed physics engine along with playing with the dark and light to have you both afraid and using the light as your ultimate ally. Frankly, it sounds quite ‘I Am Legend’ and I can’t wait for it. Is it all going to be a dream though? Certainly the A.Wake reference would suggest so…

2This is one of the reasons I first bought a 360… my most anticipated game by far! A bit sad, perhaps, but there we are! :-)
GOOD NEWS!!

3Actually the game still has a release date set of “When it’s done” direct from the developers. Any other release date set is false.
Once a release date is set it’ll appear on alanwake.com and brightfalls.net — if you don’t see it on there then feel free to disregard it.

4Who has it been re-confirmed by. Was it a date on a store website or was it by a Microsoft rep?

5Hi Matt,
This was a confirmation on multiple retail stores, along with calling a store direct here in the UK who assured me it would arrive in September. I’ve also had unconfirmed reports from someone in the industry who works very closely with Microsoft.
ADM – I’d be surprised if brightfalls.net has as accurate information as alanwake.com – brightfalls is after all a fan site not fed information by the developer right?
My source has indicated that Microsoft is unwilling to let it slip past this year but obviously won’t release it during the summer ‘games drought’. The sensible option therefore remains the start of the last quarter.
As for ‘direct from the developers’ – unless they’ve shown Microsoft something absoutely amazing then it will not slip. We’re not talking Duke Nukem Forever here. Given that publishers hold the real power these days then if my source is right, we’ll see it when I’ve said. Time will tell, but stranger things have happened and my other predictions have been right…

7Alanwake.com is the only website which can give accurate release dates.

8your “retail store source” doesnt sound too credible to me. You seriously saying you called up some stores and take whatever you were told as “confirmation” for the release :)
Right, last quarter this year is indeed a believable option which makes sense, since rarely premium games are released in spring/summer…but overall this also just sounds more like “guessing” to me than actually having a credible source.

11Retailers know nothing, they just put up a placeholder date so they can plan shelf arrangements and special deals. These dates would be estimates from head office or a vague figure Microsoft has given them.
As it currently stands, Microsoft is aiming for a 2008 release, that’s all they have said. Remedy has been quiet on all fronts for a long while, but look forward to that changing soon.
Brightfalls.net is closer to Remedy than you might think. They recognise us as the official community for the game.

13X360 lineup isn’t look to bad this year, price cut, GTA and GOW2…
Could we have a winner?

14Is Gears of War really going to be that great? I still play the first now and again but unless they offer something a little different then I can’t see it having great appeal. Will the next GTA be able to live up to San Andreas? From the previews, it is certainly sounding extremely good.

15GOW2 is getting another Camera angle (I’ve heard) and polished graphics too. Personally GOW was a mouth dropper for me!!

16The thing with Gears of War is that it is so damn satisfying to get one of those Locust monsters with the chainsaw. It’s even better when you double team and both get it in 2 player. Maybe I’m underestimating how much fun I had with it. With one particular friend we did play through it three times.
