Nintendo to introduce paid online play service

wiiwifi Nintendo to introduce paid online play service

One of the best Nintendo Wii gaming experience I have (aside from my eternal favorite Wii Sports), is playing online in Medal of Honor Heroes 2. There is just something very satisfying about fragging other players and, strangely enough, being fragged by others. Knowing that you are actually playing with real opponents make the battles more satisfying whether your are winning or losing. Of course, the biggest part of playing online on the Wii is that you can actually do it free of charge — until recently, that is.

Nintendo recently announced that it will be introducing a new pay to play service that will cover some of its newest games. What this means is that Wii gamers will be asked to subscribe to play online depending on the requirements set by each game title.

Of course, free online gaming for some games will still continue. As a way of helping consumers differentiate which game will have free online play and which one will have a subscription model, Nintendo will put a conspicuous icon on the Wii game box.

Games that have a red icon means that online play will be based on a subsciption. A blue icon means free online play.

I am hoping that Super Smash Brothers Brawl and the upcoming Mario Kart games will be for free online play.

  4. For me, this sounds completely ridiculous. I can see many games being returned because they can’t be played online. I wonder what the actual percentage of Wii owners going online is anyway. In reality, this goes against the whole philosophy of making things as simple as possible.
