I was hoping it would soon come out.  :)  I guessed right.  Found this at www.dvice.com which later on showed me that it is available for about $40 at the National Geographic website.  Figures.  Here’s a quick blurb:

Revive your USB-powered travel gadgets anywhere with this ”crank and deposit” power bank. Cameras, cell phones, or any device with a USB cord can be plugged into this unit and recharged by cranking the handle when you’re in the field or via power deposited through the included AC adapter when you’re at a hotel. It helps travelers pack lighter by eliminating the need for separate chargers.

Included: adapters to fit most Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, and LG phones

2 1/2″W x 4″H x 1 1/2″D; 6 oz.

For the frequent traveller, I think this is a must-bring gadget support tool.  I for one was made victim of a “lost for words” situation in provincial China.  I wanted to charge my phone, but the plug I brought was NOT a fit.  And the nearest shop where such adapter was available was a train ride away. Ouch!

I’ve seen several hand-cranked electronic things (radio, TV (!), etc.)  This one is timely, mother-earth caring gadget I’m sure to get one really soon.
