Quake Live (formerly Quake Zero) is based on the Quake 3 engine.  So, nothing amazing or new there then?  Well, I agree.  However, this is a free to play variation on the theme and should provide some excellent, old skool deathmatch fun in time-honoured fashion.  The beta is now available to sign up to.

What else is special about the game?  Well, it is browser based and has been programmed to work on as many machines as possible.  The chances are it might even run on your work PC so it could give you something more productive than taking a nap during your lunchtime.

So how is the game funded when you’re playing the beta (and playing the full game no doubt) for free?  It’s quite simple really.  Funds are supplied by IGA Worldwide in the form of in-game ads.  Will you get bored very quickly?  I shouldn’t imagine so; this really is a breath of fresh air in a world of Call of Duty 4.
