I wonder if we can even call it a phone, when it runs Vista on it. Even though Intel’s new Atom processors, which are aimed at the handheld market, aren’t ready for prime time yet, that didn’t stop Sharp from lifting the curtains on the new device.

The Sharp-made D4 uses Intel’s Centrino Atom platform to run Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. It has a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 on board, along with 1GB of 533MHz DDR 2 memory and a 40GB 1.8in hard drive.

The screen, despite only having 5″ has a surprisingly big resolution: 1024 x 600. Other than that the device has all the other features we are used to seeing in most medium to high-end cellphones: Bluetooth, Wifi, 2 Mp camera, Micro SD slot and TV tuner (although you probably can’t use it outside of Japan and a couple of other key countries).

The device will cost ¥128,600/$1275 (ouch!) and you’ll need to sign a ¥1600/$16 per-month contract for two years with the carrier.

It’s nice to see that our technologies make these sort of devices possible, but wouldn’t it be better to see software better suited to our devices, than our devices becoming better suited to our hardware?
