I've been reading all of the recent blogs, and articles about the overheating issues in warm climates, overheating with 3.0 updates, or no autolock setting, and a variety of other potential causes. Now, I'm not trying to be one of those 'rub it in your face' kind of people, because I'm actually concerned that I may hit the right combination of variables and mine will start doing the same thing, but, as of today;

I've been working in Southwest Saudi Arabia for the entire summer. I carry and use my iPhone 3G all day long with average daytime temperatures over 120f. I'm working both indoors and out. Inside the buildings which house multiple kilns the temperatures exceed 140f in places (between kilns etc). And in some locations that I am required to go I've seen temps in excess of 155f, all the while my iPhone is in my pocket, turned on, with OS 3.0, NUMEROUS applications running including "BackGrounder" which really makes the phone work hard. I use a Skype application on my phone to talk to the US and regularly have conversations that last an hour or more. I use my iPhone as a wireless HardDrive with a program called Discover, and I use Remote Desktop to monitor and control PC's around the facility when I'm too lazy to go there in person. I use it in Direct Sunlight ALL THE TIME, and believe me when I say Saudi Arabia Knows Direct Sunlight. I've had my iPhone for over a year, and I live in Arkansas HOT and Humid summers, with temps near or over 100f routinely. My wife and I both have iPhones and neither of us have ever seen the Overheating screen or had heat related problems. Mind you I don't leave it laying on the dashboard in a hot locked car while charging and running GPS applications. But, I work my phone pretty hard, and I'm just not seeing these issues. Maybe it was just a bad batch of phones?

I have a 3G since Sep 08 and very recently started to experience very very (burning ear) hot temperatures. Since the launch of OS 3.0 many apps can be on push notification which means that the phone is multitasking all day! As much as this is definitely annoying as hell, I do actually think the phone is doing good for the big load of stress I put on it, which is my personal finding ofcourse.

What I would recommend is changing some apps to fetch and even considering getting rid of some of them(yeah I know its difficult to choose!)

AT&T would not just exchange your iphone very easily, unless you can really prove that you got the one in 5 million, like Mark hinted.

I hope this serves as some helpful information to someone.

This is not hogwash. There are a three units 3G models at my company reported and verified overheating with diminished battery life, including mine. It just started happening after updating to 3.0. The GPS is turned off. The "Time since last fully charged" shows the Usage and Standby as the exact same amount of time. WTF?

These are faulty battery cells, so not all phones are effected.
Recall is iminent.

I noticed my phone started to overheat ever since I put a screen protector on the screen. Has anyone observed this? Also, the phone doesn't auto lock..so this is what causes it to overheat.

Not even about 20mins i picked up my Iphone 3G and it was burning up hot, I could feel the heat before i picked up the phone off of my bed, and dumb me, I put it to my ear and well lets just say, i wish i had gotten the instint (sprint).
I guess Steve Jobs needs to do a recall between the frequent dropped calls,over-heating phones, and 12 day waiting period, i had to go threw so far....i hate it.
