With Rock Band Two looming in the horizon as all signs point to a definite September release, more details are being revealed about the new game and how it impacts on the first Rock Band.

One of the touted features for Rock Band 2 is the ability to transfer the songs on the Rock Band 1 disc to the new game. However, this feature is not going to be free. According to Harmonix, there will be a one-time fee that will supposedly not exceed five dollars. The reason for the charge is that transferring the songs will entail paying additional licensing fees to the holders of the songs’ rights.

How this will go is through a patch that will be released when Rock Band 2 goes to market. An Export menu will be made available in the original game and players who select the option will be required to type in a password that is supplied with the Rock Band 2 disc. After paying the fee, the Rock Band songs will be transferred to the hard drive and can now be accessed with Rock Band 2.

Except for the minor annoyance of the fees, the idea is a good one. It eliminates the need for disc swapping whenever you want to play songs from either Rock Band 1 or 2.
