A product that recently caught my eye is the new Creative Zen X-Fi 8GB MP3 Player. I’ve been a big fan of Creative’s MP3 offerings as I have never really got on with the gear from Apple. When I got my first MP3 player in fact it was a Creative model, with only 32MB of memory. That shows how long I’ve been buying them!
So, the X-Fi is the new flagship product and offers to restore the quality of your compressed music ensuring that you hear what the artist(s) and producer(s) intended from their work. All sounds so good so far. Naturally, I had to find out whether this was true. I must say, I was quite happily not disappointed.
Here’s a rundown of the features of the product:
The only players to feature award-winning Xtreme Fidelity™ X-Fi audio technology, the Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN is available today at The CREATIVE Stores at Marina Square, Plaza Singapura and International Business Park, the online store at sg.store.creative.com and authorised dealers in Singapore. The Creative ZEN X-Fi will be available later this month.
The Creative ZEN X-Fi and Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN provide a breakthrough in sound quality for MP3, WMA and unprotected iTunes music with the X-Fi Crystalizer®, a proprietary audio technology developed at Creative’s Advanced Technology Center that restores the highs and lows to music during playback that were lost during the ripping to MP3, WMA or AAC formats. This allows you to listen to your music at a higher quality than was previously possible on any MP3 player.
The Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN introduces a new way to experience music in your home. The Creative ZEN X-Fi’s Wireless LAN capability enables you to wirelessly stream and download music from your PC to your player over your wireless home network, and playback in X-Fi audio quality.
From the living room to the bedroom, the Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN can access the music on your home PC, which can be played through the built-in speaker, a home speaker system, or even the Creative ZEN X-Fi Docking Speaker System accessory, which provides room-filling X-Fi audio quality in a portable speaker. You can also stream and download your video files in supported formats and your photos directly to your Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN from your PC. In addition, you can stream a variety of ZENcast and podcast channels to the player.
With the Creative ZEN X-Fi, you can really experience your music with the sound quality of the original recordings. To truly deliver the ideal music listening experience, Creative is including a set of premium EP-830 in-ear earphones with every Creative ZEN X-Fi and Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN player.
“We’re very excited to achieve this breakthrough of adding our X-Fi audio technology to a ZEN player, setting the highest standard in audio quality for portable music players,” said Craig McHugh, President and COO of Creative.
“Some of the top recording artists in the music industry are very outspoken about the poor quality of digital music. We addressed the issue of the poor quality of digital music by inventing X-Fi technology, which restores the quality of music that is lost during the digital ripping process, and now for the first time ever we’ve been able to implement this technology in a ZEN.”
“We also give you the freedom and flexibility of being able to listen to music, watch videos and view photos on your Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN that are stored on your PC,” continued McHugh. “You can also wirelessly add your favourite music, videos and photos to your player from your PC, so you’ll always have them with you wherever you go.”
The Creative ZEN X-Fi and Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN also feature:
* A built-in speaker so you can listen to favourite songs with friends
* X-Fi Expand to move and expand the sound forward for a natural listening experience over headphones that simulates the sound from stereo speakers
* An SD card slot so you can add more music, video or photos to the player
* A vibrant 2.5-inch TFT display with 16.7 million colour support for an excellent viewing experience with videos and album art
* Built-in FM radio with 32 presets
* Built-in microphone for voice recording
* The new Creative Centrale application for organising, CD and playlist creation, and transfer of a wide variety of video formats, including WMV, AVI, MJPEG, MPEG4-SP, DivX 4 and 5 and XviD
* Using Creative Centrale, player syncs with Microsoft Outlook – contact, calendar, “To Do” list and more
* Creative ZEN X-Fi Video Converter, which converts video files to formats suitable for wireless streaming, will be made available for web download early August 2008
* Exclusively on the Creative ZEN X-Fi with Wireless LAN models, enjoy free instant messaging over popular IM services including Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live! Messenger. Chat with friends and express yourself using personalised emotive avatars with different facial expressions and hair styles
The model that I tried was the non-WLAN version and came in the 8GB flavour. I think what impressed me most, apart from the improved sound quality, was the quality of the screen. My various DivX anime series looked amazing on it, as did the TV show I converted after ripping the DVD.
In all, the Creative Zen X-Fi is a brilliant player that unfortunately will continue to be overshadowed by the arguably weaker iPod – simply because that’s the product everyone has heard of. Fair? No. Hopefully us geeks though will take a cue from each other and check out Creative’s latest offering. Even the supplied headphones are quality. It is simply a great package that a music fan won’t be disappointed by.

1I currently have the Creative ZenV Plus 4GB mp3 & video player. I also have an X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card in my PC. If the new Zen X-Fi outputs sound as good as the X-Fi XtremeMusic then I will definitely be looking to upgrade even though I am more than pleased with my ZenV Plus. I believe you’re quite correct in stating that Creative’s offerings are better than Apple’s. The only reason I would actually prefer an iPod is the masses of offerings from 3rd party companies supplying additional equipment and connectivity such as docking systems, amplified speakers, carry-cases etc and here-in lies the problem!!!

2I wouldnt buy something from Creative even if they told me it would perform oral pleasures upon me, let alone aural ones.
Rubbish hardware that magically fails as soon as the warranty runs out. Loosy software that never gets updated and useless support who`s attitude seems to be “Weve had your money now f*ck off”

4The System 5-MC is a DAW Controller with a difference – a big difference. Based upon the Euphonix System 5 control surface design and the innovative MC, the System 5-MC tightly integrates with DAWs such as Pro Tools, Nuendo, Logic Pro, Digital Performer and Pyramix using the high-speed EuCon control protocol over Ethernet.
The control surface can be fitted with 8-48 System 5 channel strips and includes the MC Pro media application controller for master console functions and network control of multiple DAWs. The System 5-MC can work with any application that supports EuCon, HUI or Mackie Control protocol, and can switch between multiple Mac and PC workstations at the push of a button

5System 5 is a high performance digital audio mixing system specifically designed for audio post-production and music applications.
System 5 has gone through a major evolutionary redesign including new surface modules, new DSP SuperCore, and the new EuCon Hybrid Option for adding DAW control from the System 5 surface.

6I love my Creative Zen mp3 player but would like help from you experts. I want to download my PLAYLISTS from iTunes. Is there a way to do this? I know I can load individual songs and albums from iTunes by using the ZEN media program but not playlists. I tried to use a third party program called “iTunes agent” but it requires that my Zen be assigned a drive # by windows, something that creative apparently does not allow. Does any one know of a program that can help me out or how to assign a drive # ? I can be reached at stevewallace222@yahoo.com
Thanks, Steve

7i was just wondering if there is anyway of getting games onto the zen x-fi

8I recently bought a Zen X-Fi (16 Gb)
- The sounds is great, though to me the X-Fi emulator just makes the sound tinny (I don’t use it)
- The software is utter rubbish (both the video converter AND the Creative Centrale)
- The headphones may sound great and be expensive when bought separate, but that is of no real worth when the ear-plugs keep falling out. I’d rather have had rubbish headphones and a lower price on the player so I could buy a pair of better fitting ear-plugs. I wonder if Creative can’t sell ‘em on their own and just decided to bundle them to get rid of them.
- The screen has nice colors and a great resolution
- The video playback looks pretty good, but actually getting your vids converted is a pain. As mentioned, I didn’t like the bundled software (it kept locking up my PC and did not display ANY estimated time ’til completion). I found a solution in AVS4YOU version 6. Apparently, the X-Fi only really wants to play WMV9 files (despite what it says on the package) – Here is what works for my player: 320*240, 25 fps, bitrate of 600 (Audio: 80 kbps, 44100 Hz, stereo, 16 bit)
- Making playlists is a pain using Creative Centrale (you can’t listen to the music on the player whilst making the playlist – this is all kinds of stupid, since no one can remember all the great songs by title or author)
- The ‘Alpha-numerical’ buttons are very difficult to tell apart by touch – I would have preferred the way it was done on the Zen series.
- Bookmark function is great
- It’s a good implementation that you can decide what functions you see in the menu
- The loudspeaker is surprisingly good, all things considered
