Being a film geek I’m not one to really get excited too much about Hollywood movies but the news that esteemed British thespian and accomplished director Kenneth Branagh will helm the new Thor movie really go me excited. This is a guy who’s not a hack and comes from the “art film” set. The thought of him doing a comicbook hero movie is just so cool in my book.

Of course, for many people who will get to play Thor is more important than who will get to direct it. There have been a lot of names thrown around lately on who will most perrfectly fill the role of the God of War — Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Karl Urban. One guy I know even wanted Triple H from the WWE. But Branagh seems to also have made that choice already. Reportedly, the director is already in talks with actor Alexander Skarsgard to play the role of Thor. Alexander Skarsgard is the son of Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia), and he is most well known for starring in both HBO series Generation Kill and True Blood.

I think Branagh is making the perfect casting choice here. Skarsgard looks the part (he just needs to hit the gym pronto) and is even from Sweden so the Scandinavian/Nordic connection is even present. I hope this pushes through.

But what about you guys? Who do you think would be perfect for Thor? And since we’re talking about casting choices, who do you think will be perfect to play the part of Loki? Recent rumors has it that Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down) is being seriously considered for the role.
