If you were to feel my heartbeat right now, you would be amazed. The moment I read the words “geek” and “library” in one phrase, I knew that I would find something to make me high. Just so you have the context – one of my dreams is to become a librarian. Yes, it is not every day that you find someone who would admit to that, but since I left university, I have always seen myself practicing this profession one day. So when I heard about the Geek The Library movement, I was ecstatic.
What’s Geek The Library all about?
It’s a movement that was made possible by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The idea is very simple and yet brilliant at the same time: focus on what individuals are passionate about AND then highlight how libraries can support these passions.
We all know how people tend to look down on libraries. They’re boring places. They’re not cool. But if you think about it, libraries are the physical manifestations of cool things such as the Internet!
In spite of my natural tendencies to “not like” Bill Gates, I cannot help but admire him for pushing this initiative. With this kind of movement, people just might pay more attention to libraries and see their significance. Oh, and I love how they turn “geek” into a verb: Geek the library! What do you geek?
Yeah, tell me, what do you geek? I geek the library!

Good to hear that you’re a library geek.. Then this might interest you.. Signal Digital (full disclosure – I work at SD as a concept developer) is working on a project called “ding.ting”, which is part of a bigger project called “ting”.. This blog-post (translated by Google) (http://bit.ly/dingting) describes how the people involved in the project are building the web-interface of a pretty sophisticated library database.. I don’t know too much about the project, but from what I’ve seen, it seems to rock!
Hey thanks for the info! Checking it out now.
I think this camnpaign is fabulous, and i would love to see it extend to Australia so it flourish in the library community here.
P.s. I geek life :)
