Here’s one of those ideas I would never have thought of, but fortunately Twelve South has.
That space around the back of your iMac: what is it good for?
Not much, so why not put a BackPack on it: a sturdy little shelf that could hold a hard drive or even a Mac Mini (apparently).
They can be stacked up and rely on gravity and a couple of clips, so no damage will be done to the computer. There’s also the added benefit of ventilation for devices that need it.
