What Makes A Horrible Anime?

Every once in a while those of you who participate in anime communities may hear comments about the declining quality of anime. I know there are people out there who enjoy the anime that has been coming out recently, so I thought about why someone would dislike recent anime and I came up with two major reasons:

1. No Coherent Plot

akikan 540x405 What Makes A Horrible Anime?

Every story needs to have a coherent plot to be interesting, otherwise it’s just a bunch of random events that don’t lead up to anything. Ever heard of the anime Akikan? It’s about a boy that drinks a pop can which then turns into a girl. I have no clue where you can go with that, and from what I’ve heard, the writers didn’t have a clue either.

2. Sex Sells

That’s probably what the producers of anime like Princess Lover were thinking when they were coming up with the storyboard. Really now, a single average guy surrounded by beautiful 2D girls that somehow always end up flashing their panties may have worked for the first few anime of this type (ie: Love Hina), but people aren’t going to watch the same thing over and over. It’s only a matter of time before you’ve seen a guy “accidentally” walk in on a girl changing before you can predict when it’s going to happen.

Then again, there are anime that have been really successful despite having no plot or having lots of pretty girls as its main selling point. One just has to take a look at K-ON to see how something with absolutely no story could gather so many fans. If you are looking for something with a good plot, then I would have to point you towards older titles like Evangelion or Nadesico. Otherwise, it looks like anime fans will have to settle for “cute” or “sexy” for now.

I think I was born an Otaku…because that’s all people did around me for the first 5 years of my life.
I grew up with a lot of anime, manga, and games. Honestly, I’m not sure what makes a terrible anime. :\
What one person likes, someone else dislikes. We’re so unified yet distant in our likes and dislikes it’s really hard to find an anime that is just considered, universally terrible.
Like DBZ, the moon gets blown up…TWICE (or more if I missed an episode)…! Bullets are about as useful as spitting (which is a lot more powerful when used by stronger character), and death is pretty much a revolving door. Not to mention the shit that came out of DB Evolution, and that characters continually get stronger, only to find out that there’s ANOTHER person STRONGER than the last guy…that…no one seemed to notice before. Despite the OBVIOUS flaws and problems this anime had, it didn’t TRY to have an engaging story, or half a plot…nope…it knew what it was, “A show where people hit stuff really hard in the face….that you can never see clearly.” Supposedly, Akira Toriyama WANTED to end it sooner, but kept getting pushed into making it longer until we have the lovable train-wreck that was…Dragon Ball/Z/GT/whatever.

    So…
Like I said…it’s kind of hard to determine what makes an anime good or bad. :\
But notable terrible ones (In my opinion) are:
    -Naruto
    -Bleach
    -DBZ
    -Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka
(Aside from the last one, the first three are kind of a guilty pleasure. I know they’re terrible, but I can’t help but watch sometimes…I also grew up with DBZ, so I can’t really describe how bad it is…it’s like watching Commando. You know it’s stupid, but it’s so f**king awesome.
As for the last one, I really did enjoy it……until the last episode where it decided to pull a surprise ending out of their ass…despite the flags triggered for the OBVIOUS and BETTER ending…
My opinion…just because you can end an anime with a twist that people don’t expect, doesn’t mean you should…NOT ALL TWISTS ARE GOOD…!)

Just 2 reasons eh? Thats a first. I honostly havnt seen a bad anime, well… Nauto, Bleach, One Piece and the rest in that catorgory I would consider bad but bad is personal prepective. Every anime I have seen so far I can’t consider bad but I can consider them boring. If anime is going towards sexy and cute, I am ok with that. If it has a random story line like one mentioned in this post, oh well, anime is awesome like that. As long as its not boring like Nauto, Bleach and specially One Piece, I am good.

    PS: Sexy = awesome
