When I say screens, I mean the display thingie that you look at when you use your gadgets. I just read about a study carried out in South Australia which shows that people there have almost five times as many screens as the residents in each home. At first, I thought to myself, “Big deal!” The more I thought about it, though, I realized that it is indeed an interesting piece of trivia.
SGIC, an Australian insurance company, carried out the survey in an effort to check out the correlation between the “fascination” of South Australians with technology and the changes this fascination is making in their lifestyle. The figures show that the average household has about 2.4 members and about 9.7 screens. In fact, the researchers pointed out that the average household is not unlike a showroom for electronics and electrical appliances.
So what are these screens that can be found in the average South Australian household? Televisions, iPods, other mp3 players, laptops, desktop computers, and mobile phones are among the most common ones. Naturally, this led me to thinking about other parts of the world. South Australia is definitely NOT the only place in this world in which people are passionate about gadgets. I wonder what the figures are for the United States? For Japan? Even other countries in Asia would surely have high “screen numbers!”
Let’s not go far – how many screens do you have at home? We have seven (and counting) and we’re only two people. What does this say about us?

In regular use between the two of us, probably six. Not that much, actually. Well, seven if you count the alarm clock LCD. There are a few other gadgets around with screens but they’re either out of use or so occasional it’s not worth counting them.
8 not counting generic displays. I am doing this off of memory though.
Around 10 are in use by me and my wife. :-)
