All in all I think it’s fair to say that the 2000s was a good decade for Apple. The Steve Jobs-led Cupertino-based company pushed out a number of products, and while not all were raging commercial successes, they all exuded that certain “Appleness” that fanboys love and competitors try not to admit to but are secretly green with envy about. So here, in no particular order, are my top ten Apple products from 2000-2009. You’re bound to disagree with some, if not all, of them, so please leave your own thoughts in the comments below. iPod Although it feels as if the iPod has been around forever, it was in Read more »

If Intel's Tick Tock model is predictable, expect a 1nm processor in your brain by 2016
Hey geeks look at this chart. This is Intel’s “Tick-Tock” model for releasing faster, denser and smaller chips. You have an alternating innovation between making chip sizes smaller (Tick) and reinventing the chip to bring in new features (Tock). It’s sorta like how Nokia releases the 5800 XpressMusic phone and then shrinks it to the 5530 XpressMusic phone or the Nokia N97 and then following it up with the N97 mini. Yay, I managed to make the example uncomplicated. A lot has happened since the 65nm Intel Core architecture and by next year we’re going to be seeing the new Sandy Bridge thingamajig released to the public. But that’s not Read more »

Yahoo!'s "You In" Campaign adds Geekiness to Kindness
Apparently, “kindness” takes a lot of effort to get ’round these days. Have you seen this? http://kindness.yahoo.com So Yahoo! sent me an email. They are sending me USD $600 to be kind (I said yes of course. Who could resist a freebie cache of good deeds). I’m not sure if this is a global campaign, but I figure that each region (I’m from Asia) has its own interpretation for how Kindness can be implemented. What’s great — they’re not monopolizing anybody to spread the word. Yeah sure you can use your Y! Messenger account and Flickr, which are both Yahoo! products but they’re allowing people to spread the word using Read more »
Google's new URL shortener comes from Greenland
I’m always curious to know how long companies have been planning their Internet campaigns and services, so when I read about Google’s new URL shortening service (only currently available to Toolbar and Feedburner users) I decided to do a little digging. First up, they’re using the TLD (top level domain) for Greenland, in order to give them the .gl extension for the goo.gl domain name. My guess is that, if Lebanon had a .le and not a .lb extension, Google would’ve registered goog.le as well. It took a while for me to get a whois listing for it. It seems it’s not as simple as visiting a standard whois server Read more »
Update your laptop to latest wireless standard with D-Link
Go back a few years and it wasn’t uncommon to get hold of a laptop without built-in Wi-Fi capability. Those days have all but gone, though there are still a lot of laptops that only have the 802.11g wireless standard. Not a pushover when it comes to speed, but not as fast as the latest 802.11n standard. Enter D-Link, offering what they claim is the smallest 802.11n USB stick currently available. The DWA-131 Wireless N Nano USB Adapter offers a one-click secure connection to a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) access point using WPA2 encryption. It won’t break the bank, either, coming in at £34.99 in the UK — that’s about Read more »
Cool British LEGO advert from the 1970s
Forget CGI for the moment and take a look at this wonderful British TV ad from the 1970s for our old favourite: LEGO. I don’t know what TV ads are doing Stateside (or elsewhere) at present, but in the UK there’s a resurgence of ads from the 1970s and ’80s. I think it’s probably because the kids who grew up with these adverts are now in nostalgic mode and have kids of their own. Narrated by the late, great British comedian Tommy Cooper, it shows off the versatility of LEGO (assuming you have a lot of it) in a humorous way, with various LEGO creatures and objects pitting themselves against Read more »
Microsoft China needs to follow Geek Rules: Don't rip off code from Plurk!
Not all geeks are created equal. But in the sacrosanct room of all things geeky, there are rules to follow. There aren’t a lot mind you. But the few that exist are rather self-explanatory and downright compatible with the general ethics of this thing we call LIFE. Take this rule for example: Thou shalt not rip off code from a startup (especially when you’re a big conglomerate). We were first tipped off by high profile bloggers and Taiwanese users of our community that Microsoft had just launched a new Chinese microblogging service that looked eerily similar to Plurk. Needless to say we were absolutely shocked and outraged when we first Read more »
British Sun newspaper tries to go Web 2.0 before offlining itself
I find the latest TV advert by British tabloid paper The Sun quite amusing, poking fun at the iPhone and trying to convince us that it’s so much better reading a real printed newspaper than doing so online. They’ve even picked a voiceover guy who sounds very similar to Apple’s choice. It’s amusing given that the ultimate owner of The Sun, Rupert Murdoch, wants to delist his newspapers from search engines and charge for content, on top of today’s announcement that NewsNow won’t be displaying links to a load of British newspapers because of the Newspaper Licensing Authority’s pathetic licensing issues. Seems that “the must have handheld accessory for 2009″ Read more »
