Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 11

Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 11

Here we are: on the cusp of 2011, waving tearfully at 2010 and wishing it bon voyage, or telling it not to let the door hit it in the arse…depending on the kind of year you’ve had. And here we are wrapping up another week in geek, just in time to gather with friends and family and partake in the yearly Twilight Zone marathon drinking game (one shot every time Roddy McDowall looks constipated, two shots every time someone jumps out a window, chug a pint whenever a tiny robot intimidates an old lady). No more time to waste, so let’s cut straight to action. WIN: Solar Pants While also Read more »

The Top Tech Companies Resolutions for 2011

The Top Tech Companies Resolutions for 2011

Today most people are writing down or telling themselves what resolutions they will be making for 2011. I decided that I will make no resolutions, I don’t want to start the year with expectations for myself, expectations I most likely won’t meet. This year has been eventful for companies and websites alike. Apple’s iPhone 4 prototype got lost and sold to Gizmodo. Consequence: Apple’s major iPhone reveal was ruined, Gizmodo has been banned from Apple events. Gawker was hacked, Tumblr had epic downtime, Delicious almost got shutdown by Yahoo and those are just on top of my head. The people at The Joy of Tech have come up with 2011 Read more »

The 10 Most Talked-About Games of 2010

The 10 Most Talked-About Games of 2010

For reasons both good and bad, here are the ten games that started the most conversations or got the most press in 2010. These were the video games that shaped the year, and won’t soon be forgotten (even though some of them might want to be). In (more or less) chronological order, here we go… [Side note: It feels odd not to include a game from either Kinect or PlayStation Move on this list — both motion controllers garnered probably more attention than anything else in gaming this year — but this is a list of games, not hardware. And neither device has yet to have that one, defining game Read more »

The Lord of the Rings, Starring The Beatles

The Lord of the Rings, Starring The Beatles

What do you get when The Beatles express their desire to star in a Lord of the Rings movie? Off the top of my head – something that will push you over the edge, either because you think it’s hilarious or you are having a WTF moment. The guys at Super Punch decided to hold an art contest last month featuring Stanley Kubrick’s Lord of the Rings, Starring the Beatles. The result? A mixture of those two reactions I mentioned above. Bottoms Up: Happy New Year!

Bottoms Up: Happy New Year!

“Bottoms up!” is something we will all be uttering a lot in the next few days – if you aren’t already. Have you ever thought about where this phrase comes from? I did a little bit of digging, but I didn’t really find anything except the known fact that it has something to do with downing the contents of your glass, and with the glass tilting up, the bottom will be shown to the world. Retro Mobile Phones

Retro Mobile Phones

Smartphones are now the norm for mobile phones. All brands sell smartphones, it’s more difficult to get a plain mobile phone then a smartphone. Nowadays if you want to buy a phone you have to consider a lot more things then seven years ago. The brand, operating system, touch screen, qwerty or both. Back then you only considered how many minutes and SMS to buy, now data is as important as the previous two. It has become a pass time of mine, when I’m on public transportation to count how many old skool mobile phones I can spot. I remember three years ago it was cool to spot the first Read more »

The Avengers Meet Community

The Avengers Meet Community

What’s the latest TV series that is taking up all your time? I don’t watch a lot of TV, but one word has been recurring in my Twitter stream in the past month or so: Community. If the people I follow are to be believed, it could very well be the best series on TV today. I haven’t had the chance to watch it, but if there are any Community fans among you guys, you’ll have a kick out of this mashup. Read more »

Best Anime of 2010

Best Anime of 2010

It’s almost the end of the year and that means it’s time to look back and see which anime turned out to be the biggest hits of the year. As with the previous year’s ranking, this will only include TV anime and not OVAs or movies. What’s different this time around is that I will only be considering anime that finished airing in 2010, this is to keep certain long-running series from showing up in multiple years. Finally, I tried to keep in mind that not everyone has the same tastes and there’s bound to be some disagreement, but I believe that the following are the top 10 anime of Read more »

Make the Most of Your Stocking the Scientific Way

Make the Most of Your Stocking the Scientific Way

When was the last time you put up a stocking for Christmas? I certainly am too old to put one up tonight, but if I were to do that, I would put into practice what a group of researchers have “discovered” in an attempt to see just how efficiently you can stuff a stocking. After all, if you’re going to do something, might as well do it right, right? Read more »
