Flying is not everyone’s favorite activity, and we all know how much of a hassle it can be when you have to check luggage in. Just the other day, a friend of mine came back from her holidays in South Korea and she regaled me with horror stories about checking in at the airport. Packed to the brim with heavy coats and other winter clothes, she went over the luggage limit. Of course, she had no choice but to take out stuff from her bag – she ended up wearing several layers of coats just to meet the restrictions!
For sure, countless other people have similar stories to share. These stories might very well dwindle away to nothingness if this device goes mainstream. Dubbed the Gravity Ruler, the device provides you with an estimate of how much your bag weighs. It is not really a ruler the way we know a conventional ruler – it’s more like a weighing scale (but not quite).
From what I have read about the Gravity Ruler, it makes use of a cord (much like a bungee cord, I think). You loop it around your bag’s handle and hold it up. The weight of the bag will then place tension on the cord, which is used to estimate just how heavy the bag is. The design is purely mechanical, but it seems to work. In fact, designers Marcella Maltese and Lin Wei reportedly peddled their wares in a travels how in Milan and sold all of their units in less than an hour!
