The first must-have iPad app

The first must-have iPad app

If you’re a geek, and you have a pulse, then at one time or another, you have wanted a PADD. That’s “Personal Access Data Device,” to any non-Trekkers out there. I’m talking, of course, about the handheld computer of choice for crew members onboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. A few simple taps and gestures were all it took to manipulate this powerful personal tablet, and an enterprising (had to do it) fan out there has brought us one step closer to having a PADD of our own. “Captain’s Log” is a simple little iPad app that doesn’t really do anything all that new or innovative — and that’s beside the point, Read more »

Tecmo Bowl Returns

Tecmo Bowl Returns

When I was younger, I was all about Tecmo Bowl. Like any good geek, I wasn’t good at sports. Sure I tried, but it just never happened, no matter how many different sports I suited up for. Because of that, Games such as NHL 95, NBA Jam and  Tecmo Bowl ruled my afternoons. There, in the comfort of my home, I could be a winner just like everyone else. At this point, Madden has the lock on NFL properties, so you’re not going to get much in the way of competition. In fact, you’re not going to get anything but lame imitation teams, so most people don’t even try. That’s Read more »

The AT&T/Verizon/Apple Thing

The AT&T/Verizon/Apple Thing

Ever since the iPhone came out, there’s been talk about it moving over to Verizon. Speculation has been going rampant since day 1, and now there’s a new rumor about it coming back up to the surface, but this time it’s from the Wall Street Journal. Apple Inc. plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could allow U.S. phone carriers other than AT&T Inc. to sell the iconic gadget, said people briefed by the company. The new iPhone would work on a type of wireless network called CDMA, these people said. CDMA is used by Verizon Wireless, AT&T’s main competitor, as well as Sprint Nextel Corp. and a Read more »

WoWeekly: What Are Your Top 5 Must-Have Add-Ons For WoW?

WoWeekly: What Are Your Top 5 Must-Have Add-Ons For WoW?

Ever since the game upgraded to Patch 3.3.3, I have been having problems logging on. Apparently, there has been a loading screen bug that hangs the game when you log in, every so often. But I think it is fixed now, after the maintenance last night (or morning). But before I found out that there was a loading screen bug, I thought my add ons were the culprit for the slow loading time. Currently,  I have the following add ons installed: Atlasloot Enhanced Auctioneer Deadly Boss Mods Decursive GearScore Mik Scrolling Battle Text Omen Threat Meter Rating Buster Titan Panel X-Perl Unit Frames I was so annoyed the other day Read more »

No More Linux For PS3

No More Linux For PS3

Sony fanboys (fangirls) have always stood by their brand. This is a phenomenon that we can actually associate with other brands, but it seems to me that those who profess to be fans of Sony (especially the PlayStation series) are more hardcore than others. In a very recent move, though, Sony might end up alienating the very people that have made them strong in the first place. The news is that Sony is releasing a patch that will remove the option to install another OS (LINUX!) on the PlayStation 3. If you bought your console prior to the age of the PS3 Slim, you would remember this option. If you’re Read more »

Hands on with the JVC FM1 and UW Ikelite Bundle

Hands on with the JVC FM1 and UW Ikelite Bundle

Last week I placed an order for a bundle deal by Ikelite. I had said that this was the best underwater video recording solution today. I still stand by it. The promo showcases a JVC Picsio FM1 compact video recorder with an Ikelite housing. Well, the wait is over and after making the trek to the supplier I finally brought this baby home. With a little something extra. Tadah! Turns out that underwater video LED lights are about 50% cheaper than strobe flash lights for stills. The epiphany forced me to bring one home for only USD $260. I had it engraved in my brain that I would have to Read more »

5 comics inspired by the Large Hadron Collider

5 comics inspired by the Large Hadron Collider

After twenty five years, 10 billion dollars, countless protests and arguments against it, today on March 30th 2010 the Large Hadron Collider at CERN made its first successful particles collision. Breaking previous records and heralding a new era in physics research. The world was not annihilated, no black hole absorbed us and the Collider has started its way to maximum capacity to be reached in 2012. Scientists hope to prove amongst other the Higgs boson particle theory and to study dark matter. Basically the LHC will have to reveal some of the secrets of the universe since the Big Bang. The controversial nature of the LHC has inspired some funny Read more »

Would you pay $1m for Top10.com domain name?

Would you pay $1m for Top10.com domain name?

I’m not one for playing the domain name game: any time I’ve even dabbled I’ve got it wrong, the chances of finding a few names worth a lot are pretty slim, and I don’t have the time or inclination to work with a lot of small names making a few bucks here and there. Oh, if only I had owned Top10.com, which a British company has just bought for around $1m. Yes, that’s one million dollars. Granted, it’s a pretty nifty name, and because the company who now owns it specialises in technology comparison websites, makes a lot of sense to own. Potentially small change as well, given that the Read more »

L'Oreal marketing: MP3 better than Vinyl? Huh?

L’Oreal recently ran a TV ad campaign in the UK for its new hair care product “INOA”, suggesting that its funkily-named coloration product is altogether better than any existing system. Maybe it is, but to a music-appreciating tech geek, the comparisons fall a little flat. Take a look: (Hopefully that video is still there, though for some reasons advertisers don’t always like the exposure that free YouTube marketing gives them) OK, so “first there was the road map. Now there is the GPS”. Let’s skip for a moment the horrible phrase “the GPS” because that’s not the focus of this rant. Now… “First there was vinyl. Now there is the Read more »
