1 Part Weird, 2 Parts Awesome: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter

1 Part Weird, 2 Parts Awesome: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter

I go to the bookstore at least twice a week, typically to look for new magazines to pitch to, or see what new books are out. For the past few months, I’ve been passing by Pride, and Prejudice, and Zombies, mostly because I really didn’t have a lot of interest in the characters – although zombies are always good for some decent entertainment. Last week, I walked into the store and saw Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, front and center. My first thought was that it was more hype based on Twilight, so I stayed away. I could give two craps if Honest Abe throws an axe through a sparkly douchebag, Read more »

Working!! – A Potential Hit

Working!! – A Potential Hit

The beginning of the spring anime season is still a month away, but that hasn’t stopped “Working!!” from getting a head start. This past week a sneak preview (the first episode) of Working!! was aired in Japan. When I started watching the episode, my initial reaction was “oh great, another boring slice-of-life anime with no plot,” but further into the episode I found myself actually enjoying it. The setting of the anime is mainly in a family restaurant called Wagnaria and revolves around the staff that work there. Normally, you’d think that watching a bunch of people working in a restaurant would be pretty boring, but the characters’ personalities and Read more »

Check out any of the latter releases of SONY Vaio laptops and you’ll be surprised to find a dual card reader up front boasting Sony’s M2 memory AND SD card support. Yep, Sony is in the market for SD cards, realizing, after 10 years how big a market this is. Someone probably pointed out to the execs how sales figures “could have been helped” if only their devices also supported SD. Here you go: SF-2N1 2GB SD Class 4 $14.99 SF-4N4 4GB SDHC Class 4 $29.99 SF-8N4 8GB SDHC Class 4 $44.99 SF-16N4 16GB SDHC Class 4 $79.99 SF-32N4 32GB SDHC Class 4 $159.99 SR-2A1 2GB microSD with adapter $14.99 Read more »

Is your nation sinking? Build a new one!

Is your nation sinking? Build a new one!

In the Indian Ocean, there are 1,200+ islands that together are known as the nation of Maldives. These tiny islands are never more than six feet above sea level, so you can imagine how climate change could be a concern to the people of Maldives. If sea levels rise even just a tiny bit, Maldives could find itself submerged beneath the ocean. Maldives’ solution? Artificial, floating islands. A company from the Netherlands called Dutch Docklands, which specializes in water-based architecture, has signed a deal with the Maldivian government to build a number of floating islands that will house major facilities like a golf course and a convention center. You know those Read more »

AT-AT Cable Organizer

AT-AT Cable Organizer

If there’s one thing I’m a fan of, it’s organization. I hate having wires strewn across my desk, I hate kicking them when I work, and most importantly, I hate seeing them. Wires should be hidden is what I think, and apparently, I’m not the only one. Behold the AT-AT cable organizer kit, available overseas at Geek Cook. It folds up into various positions, looks cool, and hides all sorts of goodies in its torso. Stuff a power strip in there, hang the wires out the side, then marvel as your friends wonder where all your cables went. OK, so it’s not the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen, but Read more »

6 things you may not know about Oscar statuettes

6 things you may not know about Oscar statuettes

1) Oscar statuettes aren’t solid gold. Winners of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences annual awards just love to talk about how heavy their award statuettes are. They go on and on about it, they do bicep curls with their award. We get it! It’s heavy! (Actual weight of an Oscar: 8.5 pounds.) The winners are implying that the statuettes are solid gold, but don’t believe it. They’re gold-plated. They’re really made of a composite metal called britannium (93% tin + 5% antimony + 2% copper) that’s heated to its liquid state and cast in a mold. After some sanding and buffing, an electroplating process covers it in Read more »

Product overload – A camera research guide

Product overload – A camera research guide

Today at the electronic store I saw people looking at cameras and it was obvious they had no idea which is which and would be looking purely at the size and color. Like a lot of regular consumers they probably end up buying something, set it on auto and take photos. When dSLR went mainstream lots of people bought one for their casual shooting and then realizing it was over their head. Till today I see lots of secondhand ads of people saying their are selling their dSLR because it is too much for what they need. I realized that it’s the modern day syndrome, a lot of choice and Read more »

This supermassive black hole could eat the universe

This supermassive black hole could eat the universe

The only thing more impressive than this jaw-dropping image is the fact that it’s real. It’s not a painting or a computer-generated image. It’s the real deal, and it shows something that really exists, a mere 50 million light years from Earth. So what is it? We’re all thinking the same thing, right? Behold the open mouth of Galactus!! But no. In reality, it’s something a little less tabloid, but every bit as awe-inspiring. You are looking at what NASA describes as a “rapidly growing supermassive black hole” located in the nearby galaxy NGC 1068. (Seriously, scientific community, can’t we come up with cooler names?) This bad boy is twice the size Read more »

Nemesis The Impostors #1

Nemesis – The Impostors #1 was released this week by DC, and I am pleased to say that it contains the same level of crazy that was found in Final Crisis Aftermath: Escape. There remains the same mechanism of staccato storytelling, jumping from scene to scene, forward and backward in time until you manage to piece together just what is occurring. Maybe. I personally adore this style, where the writer makes you work to decipher the story. Coupled with the enforced empathy that enables you to share in Nemesis’ disorientation, this is a highly satisfying read. This has to be my pick of the week. One other series that began Read more »
