It’s funny how things come full circle. When I was born, my parent’s had a friend of theirs who had a child around the same time named Tara. We’ve kept in touch over the years, off and on, and now we’re Facebook Buddies. Granted, I haven’t seen her since I was an infant, but it’s kinda neat. When I got a little older, I got into Legos. I loved them so much that I amassed this mammoth collection of bricks that my parents ended up keeping in a large cardboard box in my room. Later, as I got older, I sold all of my Legos so that I could buy Read more »

Want Windows Phone 7 Series? You're Going to Have to Buy a New Device
Sometimes I just don’t get Microsoft. And by sometimes, I mean most of the time. There’s been a lot of hype around the release of Windows Phone 7 Series, mostly because it’s touted as yet another “iPhone Killer,” just like the Droid, Storm and G1 before it. We don’t know yet whether or not WP7S is going to win versus the iPhone, but one more thing just put another hiccup in the lineup. There are lots of people who already own Windows Phone devices, and love them. Problem is, they can’t upgrade to WP7S, per a recent report in APCMag. From the article: Despite the HD2 meeting many of the Read more »
Simply 'Divine': From Photoshop PSD to WordPress Free of Charge
One of the hats I wear is that of an editor of a men’s magazine. We have, in our niche some of the best creative directors and artists to ever design a cover through and through. Truthfully, we’ve never really used Photoshop to remove blemishes, beauty marks and other such imperfections, especially when shooting the ladies and this is part of our “keeping it real” attitude and a statement we want to make in the industry. However, as far as print goes, I’ve always found a gap when it comes to converting the magic of print design into something on the web. Most of the artists we hire, for some Read more »
Death and the web: inevitable tech decisions
Sadly, this week I am coming to terms with the death of a friend. They’re the first person I know to die that had a social media presence — namely a Facebook account — and at present that page seems eerily ‘in limbo’. Social networking seems to be at such a place presently that, although it is widely accepted as the norm by those who use it, for others it is still a complete mystery. Yet, particularly if someone dies quite young, it is those who are confused by Web 2.0 that may be left to decide what to do with the accounts. The Facebook account in question hasn’t been Read more »
Microsoft forced to offer Europeans choice of browsers
From today, millions of Europeans who use Windows will be given the choice of whether to switch their default browser from Internet Explorer to one of eleven others. It follows a lengthy legal battle in Europe which has seen Microsoft accused of anti-competitive behaviour because it bundles Internet Explorer with the Windows operating system. This means that many computer users don’t realise there are alternative browsers available — amusing given that many users don’t really appreciate what a ‘browser’ really is. Us geeks have been switching in droves to alternatives such as Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome, but most ‘standard’ users have stuck with IE out of ignorance. It’s interesting Read more »
The Otaku Elimination Game
If you’ve found yourself searching the net for something amusing to read lately, you might want to check out something called “The Otaku Elimination Game” here. The main purpose of the OEG is to weed out bloggers from the anime blogging community who use the term “otaku” incorrectly. As explained on their site, the original definition of an otaku was someone with an unhealthy obsession towards something (usually anime). Nowadays, however, it seems like anyone with a remote interest in anything related to anime is calling themselves an otaku. At some point the creators of OEG felt that enough was enough and started their campaign to separate the true otaku Read more »
Rock-It – Speakers Everywhere
I go on a lot of business trips, and along the way I’ve developed quite a collection of gadgets that I take with me. My iPhone is always handy so I don’t always need a dedicated iPod, but there are times when I’d rather hear the music through a pair of speakers rather than my headphones. Meet Rock-It, a portable speaker system that turns ordinary objects into speakers. How does it work? Honestly, I’ve got no clue, I don’t have enough XP to understand it. But what I can tell you is that the device plugs into the headphone jack on your iPod/MP3 player, and then there’s a corded device Read more »
Classic Clash of the Titans on Blu-Ray March 2nd
One of the first movies I ever saw that pushed me down the road to geekdom was the original Clash of the Titans movie. I was pretty young when the movie first came out, but it was played so often on the TV that I must’ve watched it 100 times before I turned 10. The at-the-time amazing special effects and Greek hero storyline sucked me in and made me a believer. The movie featured a lot of big names for the time, including Laurence Olivier. This is the movie that made Harry Hamlin a household name, and through the 80s, he was a pretty big star. Now, not so much. Read more »
