March 25: Tolkien Reading Day
Tolkien geeks would probably scoff at me for posting this a day late, and I really have no excuse! I will willingly take a hit or two to the head for forgetting that yesterday was Tolkien Reading Day. Then again, I am not really that much of a Tolkien geek although I have read the Lord of the Rings books countless times. Anyhow, since 2003, March has been celebrated as Tolkien Reading Day. And how did this relatively new tradition begin? According to the story, a journalist came up to the people at the Tolkien Society. This is a group that is, obviously, dedicated to the famed author of the Read more »
The Avatar home video decision
To buy or not to buy? Fox is releasing James Cameron’s Avatar on DVD and Blu-ray April 22nd. Fans of the movie will be tempted to buy it then — it’s a nice little environmental tie-in, as the 22nd is also Earth Day. But take note: all you’re getting for your MSRP of $29.98 (DVD) or $39.99 (Blu-ray) is the movie. That’s it. No extras, no behind-the-scenes features, making-of docs, not even a trailer or a commentary track. It’s just the movie. I suppose it’s somehow appropriate that the first blockbuster movie to get mainstream audiences to pay $17 a ticket is equally pricy when it arrives on home video. Read more »
Michael Cera is a Badass – Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Trailer Premieres
Boy there’s a sentence I never figured I’d write. First, let’s do a little backstory. I’m not a Michael Cera fan really, although I have seen most of his movies. He tends to play the same character in all of them – lovable doofus who falls in love and gets the girl. That’s why originally, I had no interest in this movie. In fact, I had no interest even 30 seconds into the trailer. But wait, there’s more. I’m also a huge Simon Pegg fan. Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz are steady members of my favorite DVD titles list, and his appearance in Star Trek was excellent as Read more »
Dr Horrible Comes to the iPhone
When the writer’s strike was going on a while back in Hollywood, very few things came out of that time. One of them though was the brilliant Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog [iTunes link], a three-part series featuring Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day, all written and directed by Joss Whedon. Basic plot goes like this: NPH plays Dr. Horrible, a second-tier super villan who wants to get into the Evil League of Evil. Problem is, every time he does something to try to get the attention of the league, his arch nemesis – Captain Hammer played by Nathan Fillion – stops him in his tracks. [Mild spoilers ahead] Read more »
3D 8-Bit
Like all of my posts, this will start with a seemingly random story. A few months back, my wife and my mother were talking about decorating our then-impending child’s baby room, and the subject of painting the room came up. My mom had painted Sesame Street characters along the wall, so that started the ideas. I’m not sure if my wife wanted to one-up or top my mom or not, but she decided to paint the entire room in Dr Seuss. Characters, background, etc. One giant Dr Seuss room. It took a few months, but she got it done and it’s amazing looking. Which brought up the topic of what Read more »
Tech & Manners
I was born in Canada, as were my parents. My deepest apologies. Anyways, that meant that I was raised to be super polite. I remember very specifically going to Toys R Us one day, and walking inside the store while my mother waited at the door. I got about 15 feet past the entrance before I noticed my mom was nowhere to be found, so I walked back to her. “Kevin, you open the door for a lady,” my mother said. I argued – something totally convincing from a 7 year old, I’m sure – and she said, “Well I’m not going in until you open the door for me, and Read more »
WoWeekly: My Love And Hate Relationship With GearScore Add On
I’ve been having a love-hate relationship with this add on ever since it came and more and more people have been using it. First and foremost though, if you don’t know what GearScore is, it is an add on that allows you to gauge a player’s gear level. It removes the need to manually inspect a player’s gear by clicking on him and checking out his gear, or by alt-tabbing and checking out the WoW armory. All you have to do is mouseover a player in the game and it will scan and calculate the player’s gear level and show you the player’s gearscore via a tooltip At first, I Read more »
Nintendo takes the 3D plunge
Nintendo has announced that it will be first out of the gate with a game console that features 3D gaming — and it’s a handheld, no less. The successor to the super-successful DS handheld is being called the “3DS,” and is said to somehow offer handheld gamers the experience of playing games in 3D without the need for special glasses. Nothing is known yet about the technology Nintendo is using to make this work, but the company plans to unveil the device at E3 in June. Industry scuttlebutt suggests that the 3DS console could go on sale for this holiday 2010. It doesn’t take a cynic to realize that this Read more »
Should you buy an iPad?
Apple is already accepting iPad pre orders and the expected sales are higher than when the iPhone was newly released. If you are still doubting about buying an iPad BBspot has a helpful flowchart to help you decide. Way funny, I especially like the “Like to touch things?” question, it so is an iPhone and now iPad thing considering it’s touch screen only. Someone should also come with a flowchart focused on questions like: “Do you like flashy animations?”, “Yes”, “Buy a HP Slate”, “No” “Buy an iPad”. And for multitasking, 3G or WiFi , etc. This fun flowchart sure made me think about which target group will be buying Read more »
