I confess I really like the idea. Taking What-If a step further, while providing stories with which we readers have an emotional investment. Read more »

Storm Troopers Redux
The Star Wars Stormtrooper is an iconic figure known the world round. I don’t know too many people who couldn’t identify the white and black armored figure, and he’s one of my personal favorites. There have been quite a few different variations on the character over the years, but now there are a few more out in the wild. The 501st Legion is a group of Star Wars enthusiasts who all have and wear costumes from the Star Wars series, particularly those from the empire. Everything from Darth Vader, the Royal Guards and even a few Galactic Marines all make appearances in the group, and they’ve been going strong for Read more »
Top 8(+2) NES Speedruns and Why I Could Never Do Them
Let’s begin with the definition of a speedrun first. A speedrun is a play-through, or recording thereof, of a video game performed with the intent of completing it as quickly as possible, optionally under certain prerequisites, mainly for the purposes of entertainment and competition. Wikipedia Throughout my 25+ years of gaming I have tried a number of speedruns, but have succeeded in exactly zero of them. To accomplish a speedrun not only do you need patience and a thorough understanding of the game’s mechanics, but you also need a bit of memorization and actually be GOOD at video games. Now we are all good at games, but this kind of Read more »
Marvel's Avengers revamp
For months, Marvel has been teasing major changes to its Avengers titles following the earth-shattering events (and aren’t they always earth-shattering?) of Seige. Thanks to major events going all the way back to Avengers Disassembled, Secret War, House of M, Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign, Siege represents the culmination of the ongoing dark times that have colored the Marvel Universe since 2004. Once Siege ends in a few months, Marvel is promising a new “Heroic Age,” a new time of optimism, when superheroes come out of the darkness and into the light. Nowhere are these changes more present than in the just-revealed details of the Avengers Read more »
Design Concept: Stackable USB Connectors
I imagine that a lot of our readers have a USB hub somewhere on their desks, just like I do. I also imagine that they don’t often wear pants, but maybe that’s just me. Literally. Anyways, my USB hub has cords going all over the place from it, and it’s gotten to the point where I have one stacked on top of the other just to gain some extra space. It’s a little frustrating at times. That’s why when I see designs like this, I get a little excited. It’s from Yanko Design, and although it’s just a concept right now, I certainly hope someone figures out how to make Read more »
Your Next Captain America is the Human Torch
The long hunt is finally over. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next person to play Captain America in Marvel’s latest project is Chris Evans. How do you know him? Well, he’s “that guy” from Not Another Teen Movie, the lead character in Push, and of course, the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four Series. From the article: Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel’s offer, first detailed on Friday, but that the dealmaking moved so fast it’s now all about dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. Marvel would not comment on the development, and CAA, which reps the actor, declined comment. Evans was offered the role Read more »
Machinarium dev releases feature film with puppets. Stunning.
We interviewed the extremely talented guys from Machinarium before and as it seems, their talent overflows from game development and encompasses into the art of telling a good story. With Machinarium telling the story of a robot through grunts, quirky animation, and speech bubbles, Kooky’s Return is told using the age old ‘Labyrinth’ style with a combination of puppets and live actors. No David Bowie here tho. [YOU MUST WATCH THIS TRAILER] Kooky´s Return (Kuky se vrací) is a combined puppet and live action feature based on a child’s fantasy. A seven year old boy whose teddy bear Kooky has been thrown away wonders what his toy is up to Read more »
Apple finally embracing social media
Notoriously secretive tech/geek utopia Apple — which actually forbids its employees from having their own blogs — might finally be signing on with the social media revolution. It’s only been going on for you know, like… four whole years. (That’s how old both Facebook and Twitter are, and yes, I’m intentionally ignoring the horrendous mess that is MySpace.) It started a while back when Apple slowly, almost timidly, tested the waters with several Twitter accounts that announced new content on the iTunes store. Then came full iTunes integration, where iTunes users can share likes and purchases from the store on either Facebook or Twitter, right from inside the iTunes app. Read more »
Geek Baby: Onesies and Bibs
My wife and I had our first child a month ago, and I’ve been on the constant search for cool things to do with my baby. See for dads – at least for me – the baby portion of life really isn’t very eventful. After all, I’m not the baby factory, and so I’m not going to be the food source. Instead, I occasionally hang out with him on the couch, change a diaper or 12, but otherwise, it’s just not very exciting. I can’t take him to his first ballgame or anything, and it’s not like we can go check out Avatar with a stroller, so instead, I come Read more »
