In 2005, I was dating this chick who I was just kinda into. She was alright, but she lived pretty far away and she smoked, so it wasn’t a good match. It was a Sunday afternoon, and I was out on a blind date with this small whale when I decided to fake an illness – I think it was anthrax poisoning – and bail out. Since I was all the way over on that side of town, I gave the first girl a call.
“What’re you doing?”
“Playing Mario Kart on the Nintendo64.”
“…”
A few years later we were married, and we just had our first child. We also have every Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft console ever built, plus a Sega Genesis for fun.
Back in high school though, I didn’t own a console. Instead, every day after school I’d head over to my buddy Shann’s house and play games. The hot tickets at the time were NHL 95 and Street Fighter II, so we switched between the two depending on the day.
I never got the hang of the hadouken move. No matter how hard I tried, I always seemed to pull it off when I didn’t need it, but when I needed it most, I ended up doing nothing. Pissed me off to no end.
Which is why I really enjoy this picture. Sure, it’s Photoshopped and all that, but it reminds me of my insane frustrations with trying to roll my left thumb just right. Damn that controller.
